I just wanted to know if anyone could recomend a school that they taught at in Chengdu. Please include how you were treated and what kind of apartment you were given.

Also, what is the best part of Chengdu in which to live? (i.e. a place near the city center with a good mix of chinese culture and some expat community). THanks! Smile

I taught in an experimental school in a very leafty suburb of Chengdu, about 25 minutes and RMB 25 by taxi from centre city. It was wonderful. I had all the joys of Chengdu life (the people are great, the weather is a bit rainy, however)

and the apartment was 180-200 square meters...It was huge...a formal dining room, a living room the size of most Chinese apartments, two bedrooms, a full solarium / winter garden and a second full balcony, a wonderful foyer wiith an entrance hall the size of most Chinese living rooms...a kitchen with natural gas (not bottled propane -- real in-line natural gas), two bathrooms, one laundry, my God..I never ever had anything like that in the West...all furnished with wonderful traditional Chinese furniture, scrolls, etc. I just couldn't handle the ever-present Chengdu drizzle..but the food and the people and the students were great.

I don't know where you are now, but if you are interested in the school, PM me. Good wages, too, and they have permit to employ foreign teachers.

And it was the best social life that I had in China.

i don't know the best schools to work for in chengdu--my school is decent, but it's outside the city by about an hour on the bus. other than that i know of the major universities and a handful of training centers/companies that hire out teachers to school. as far as i know, pay is comparable across the board, but universities require fewer hours.

as far as where to live, anywhere within the first ring road (yi huan lu) is good, particularly within the south section. the bus system here is pretty efficient, and the city (particularly within the first ring) is fairly small, so getting around by bike, on foot, by bus, by taxi, or a combination thereof, is no problem. streets and districts that are fairly popular are kehua bei lu; dongmen da qiao; qingyang gong.

My school is in the west part of the first ring road (near qing yang gong). I'm treated well and have a great apartment set up. Very big, two bedrooms, all to myself, walking distance to my school.

I do agree with the above though, the best location in Chengdu is the south section of the first ring road.

I don't know about the best school in Chengdu but the foreign teachers I know here all seem pretty content with their jobs.

All in all it's a good city. Good luck.
