Saudi Arabia - in theory at least - has a complete ban on alcohol.
Most of the Sheikhdoms permit the sale of alcohol, albeit sometimes in restricted circumstances, to card-carrying "Westerners". Kuwait certainly did have a Saudi style blanket ban on alcohol, though somebody told me that regulations have recently been changed, and that the alcohol situation there is now more similar to that which prevails in the UAE or Qatar. Is this true? |

I don't know about Kuwait, but I've heard in the UAE and Oman the rules are a lot laxer. I've even heard that GASP you can buy beer at convienence stores! I don't know if this is true. |

That would be a shock, you can't do that in Canada, perhaps in Quebec you might be able to. |

I knew it sounded to good to be true. I'll never believe a German again. |

I haven't heard anything about the Kuwait rules being relaxed. I'll have to ask someone.
In the other Gulf countries all alcohol is sold either in hotels or in government liquor stores. Perhaps someone saw some of the non-alcoholic 'near beer' sort of stuff and thought it was the real thing.

Not quite. But there are a couple of places in the Northern Emirates where you can buy booze legally without a licence. It's technically illegal to take it into the other Emirates: everyone does, anyway. Not only do you not need a licence, it's also a lot cheaper because it doesn't have the 30% tax added. |

Duty Free. You can also pack a bottle or two in your bag(s) before entering the UAE and buy at Duty Free. Buying beer at duty free isn't worth it, but the wine selection is better than the licensed stores. Spirits are a lot cheaper in duty free. Be sure to get visiting friends and family to buy their allotted amount upon entering, too!
When in doubt, take a trip to the "Hole in the Wall" in Ajman, and for a less dubious outing, try the shop in Um Al Quwain. |

I think the best jobs in the Middle East are for the Masters candidates, or perhaps teachers with primary and/or secondary certification. Sometimes working in a great school can be a lot easier than dealing with the university politics which flare up from time to time. |

So, now I am quoting myself... I swear that I answered this one last night, but it isn't here. Anyway, I talked to someone in Kuwait by Skype yesterday and no rule changes in Kuwait. Still no legal booze sales.

You probably did VS, but don't worry you're not going senile .....yet Apparantly Dave has a new server so we should be faster and no more critical errors. However, in changing over some posts and pms were lost in the process. |

I too posted on this thread this morning, only to see my words of wisdom disappear!
Anyway, all I said was that VS had confirmed my suspicion that nothing had changed in Kuwait. The reason I asked in the first place was because a colleague of mine told me she had friends who went to imbibe in "Westerners'" bars in Kuwait. I kept asking her if she was sure it was Kuwait and she insisted she was. Maybe she meant Bahrain??? |

Nice to know I haven't gone completely senile yet. I hope this means fewer white screens with the little messages from phpBBB management.
Now if I could only remember if I posted any other crucial advice anywhere else.

I've never worked in Japan, so I couldn't say. However, a number of my colleagues worked there before coming to the UAE and, so far, none of them have gone back. |
