| Like a lot of other teachers I received "the letter" yesterday explaining why, when and how much I've been overpaid and the options available to me for paying it back. Mine is a very minor amount so it's not a great concern. However, I'm wondering what other people are doing. I haven't heard it from a credible source, but it does seem like if people choose to not pay the money back there's nothing ECC can do about it. But I'm really not sure. If you've received one of those letters, are you paying it back or not paying it back? |

I would think that people who work for ECC, and like their jobs, might want to consider paying it back. People who are just finishing a contract, and are going home, probably won't. Were there other teachers at your branch school who were significantly overpaid? |

I'm nost sure, I didn't actually get the letter until the day before Golden Week. Since then, schools have been closed and we're all on holiday so I can't really say about other teachers. However, at our annual HR training in April it was discussed a little bit and the HR people said that at least a third of us would be impacted and eventually contacted. In terms of amounts, mine was a few thousand yen, but I've heard rumours that some people were overpaid several times that amount.
The letter we've received doesn't exactly give us the option of refusing to pay it back, but it certainly isn't saying we have to. It simply asks for our agreement to do so. I'll pay it back because it's no skin of my nose and it was clearly outlined where I was overpaid, but I'm just wondering about people who either don't agree or are dealing with a huge sum of money. |

I've never seen the letter on the Union link and it's not the one I recieved. Basically, ECC made some sort of foul up with their pay system over the past few months and people got paid for work they didn't do. For example if you called in sick and didn't go to work, you got paid as if you worked.
The error was discovered and ECC sent effected teachers a letter explaining what happend and asking for their agreement in reimbursing ECC with the money teachers were mistakenly paid. So if you were paid 20 000 yen too much in February they'd like to dock you 20 000 yen from one of your upcoming paycheques.
I started the thread specifically to hear from other ECC teachers who may be wrestling over what to do. The letter I received from ECC isn't forcing you to pay back the money (which I find surprising) rather it simply asks for your permission in deducting your future pay. Given the choice, I'm sure this creates a bit of a moral dilemma for people. |
