The big one's that hire overseas might. I'd be very surprised if a school hiring you in Japan would call your home country to check references. What would be the point?

| Like any job it's a crap shoot, they may check, they may not. Personally, I feel more comfortable when a job actually does check my references. It implies that they're not desperate and they won't take just anybody, which i think is a good thing. |
