I would have belted out a bit of Barnsey right there in the classroom. |

True Story...
1. Do you have a gun? (Yes, by the way I have one with me right now.)
2. Do you know Tupac? (Of course, and I've also met Britney Spears, the Tooth Fairy, and Michael Jackson--when he was black though.)
3. Do you eat rice? (No. I, like most Americans, only eat at McDonalds.)
4. Are your boobs real? (No I put them in everyday because I love all the attention I get from nasty salarymen and little boys. Besides everyone in the states has fake boobies. Duh.) |

So I should have answered with:- "The original one after which all the others are named........"
Barnsey himself comes from the 'original', and best, one |

You know, for as much false information as I see spread over the internet these days, I'm rather skeptical of your "original" claim. At the moment I'm still counting it four to one against. So I think the kid had it right by suggesting you go to America. |

Well, in this case, I'd say the pragmatic solution is the most likely one.
As they say, "Never attribute to malice which can be adequately explained by stupidity."
The most probable answer is that the student really had no idea where Scotland was. |

Actually one of the strangest questions I have received in Japan came from my children's kokugo teacher on a home visit. After tea and cookies, this very old-fashioned woman in her mid-40's, looking at my red hair, asked in her stilted English:
"Is your hair the same color all over your body?" |
Well... We're waiting for an answer here Mr. Abu.
I've had this one several times.
Q: "What's your girlfriend's name"
A: "Hiromi (or any other Japanese woman's name you can think of)"
Q: "Oh! Is she Japanese?" |
Too funny!
I was asked if I had a girlfriend (shortly after saying that I am married).
My reply: "No, my wife won't let me have a girlfriend." |

I've been asked by two of my teachers, "What do you eat for dinner every day?"
Dude if I ate the same thing every day I'd hate eating. o_O
I replied, "Food." |

"Do Americans wear shoes in bed?" Has been a favourite of the last four or five years.
After saying, I don't know, you'd have to ask an American a few times, I asked why and was told that they saw shoes being worn in bed "in a movie". I check that they know movies aren't real but I guess they are thinking of a sex scene where two people just fall into bed clothed and shod.
Last week I was asked if foreigners hiccough!
The most ludicrous question I've ever been asked was, "Your eyes are blue so is everything you see blue?" I retorted with the same question and substituted blue for brown. "No! What? Huh? Ohhhh!"
Now when I get asked a dumb question (ie all the time), I just ask it back:
"Do you eat burgers every day?" "Do you eat sushi every day?"
"Do all foreigners have a small face?" Do all Japanese have a big face?"
I'd say that embarrasses and annoys in equal measure! |

"How do you come to school, by Plane?"
This next one is a comment my friend got from a Japanese teacher in the staff room. He had just eaten his ice cream too quickly...
"Argh! Brain freeze!"
"EEeeeeeee, foreigners get brain freeze too? |

How do you say 'Hello Kitty' in English?
Asked in Japanese by an eight-year-old. I'm sure I've had some weird ones from adults but can't think of them at the mo. |

Ha. Had a kid ask me the same question just the other day. I looked him very seriously in his brown eyes and answered. "Yes".
But this was a JHS kid. I think (hope?) he was joking. |

When I read about it in a blog of another teacher, I wasn't sure if I should believe it, then one of my online students asked me that same question
"you're not a cherry boy?"
cherry boy seems to be a term for virgins and even though I was tempted -not to regale a middle schooler about tales of my sexual escapades, but to correct the term cherry boy for him-, I just feigned ignorance. |
