| I think regardless of what the message is, the higher-ups see and hear a large group of people that are easy to mobilize, fairly unified, and if legalized, likely to vote for whoever will cater to them Frist...I mean first. |

at least things were peaceful.
it would have been nice if INS had taken this opportunity to deport people en masse. that way they wouldn't have to spend so much time/tax money hunting for people one by one. i guess deporting a million people at a time would be a logistical problem though.
i do think the govt needs to get serious about a realistic immigration policy that they will actually enforce across the board. and i think illegal immigrants need to protest in their own countries, which are apparently so horrendous that they don't want to live there any more. |

anyone seen A DAY WITHOUT MEXICANS?
No dunkin donuts, Mc Donalds, Burguer King, Starbucks, Sears, Crispy cream,
Saludos a tod@s.

I hate when people pull the old "the Mexican government treats illegals like crap, therefore our government should be entitled to do the same" arguement. This has all of the logical soundness of "that guy just punched someone in the head, therefore it's cool for me to do, also". It's no way to try and claim the moral high ground. The mexican people in the US should not be treated like governmental reperesentatives any more than I should be held directly accountable for Bush's often deplorable actions.
That said, I just know too many immigrants, illiegal and otherwise, who are contributing greatly to my city, and not doing anything criminal other than existing here without the proper documentation. Many of them pay taxes, find car insurance through companies that accept consular ID as proof of identity, have proper bank accounts, take english classes at community college, and are completely upstanding citizens other than fact that their papers aren't legit. Why not have them here?
I think it's our system of endless buerocracy and needless paper trails that needs to be fixed, so that immigrants aren't forced to desparate measures to get here. Thank you and I'll jump off of my soap box right about now. |

sarlitz.. you may have a point that the fact that Mexico treats illegals far worse is not an argument against the Mexican illegals that are in the US... but it is VERY relevant to the policies and actions of the Mexican govt. It means that the Mexican govt has no right to criticize the US for enforcing its own laws or even to have the laws it has. For example, the Mexican Congress's passing a resolution supporting the boycott is quite hypocritical. And Mexico is very quick to check FM3s as has been noted on this forum and in any book Ive read about foreigners having businesses in Mexico.
cwc... we actually agree on this one. People breaking the law don't have the rights of people who follow it.
I really believe nothing will be done with the estimated 12 mill illegals (of any nationality) in the US until something serious is done with the Mexican border. Almost all the illegals (again from just about any country, including China) come through the southern border. So until a wall or some other serious, very visible obstacle is in place, dont expect the American people to support any kind of solution for those who are already here. We did that in 1986 and this is where we are now.
Kinda interesting to note that illegal immigrants in my country cannot be arrested for protesting in the street openly (even to the point of being on TV) but I, here legally, am barred by the Mexican constitution from doing anything political (not that I want or should). The gov did not use the rallies as an opportunity to round up people, nor do I think they should have (bad PR) However I DO think, the govt should check out all those businesses that closed down yesterday to see if how many illegal workers they have .... Im betting a LOT!
Basically, we should do three things:
1) Build a wall - I know Fox whines that it will hurt Mexico-US relations, but thousands flaunting US sovereignty already has done that.
2) Crack down on employers hiring illegals
3) Allow only those in the US legally to send money out of the country.
Then lets talk about a guest-worker program. We got snookered by our own politicians in 86.... dont want that again.
Its a lot better logistically and sure would take a lot of the reason for being here illegally. I think #3 will really sort out who wants to be here as part of the US from those who simply want to take advantage of us.
Lastly, I wonder if anyone took a poll at any of these rallies to find out who was there. If I had to bet, I would say slightly less than half were illegals, and more than half were supporters of open borders (only for the US, not any other country of course), meaning US-born citizens. I really doubt there were many legal immigrants and those who were have illegal relatives. |

Hopefully populism is dead in the USA. |

Thanks for the support Guy.Participated in protests in Los Angeles,San Diego and San Ysidro.A busy day for me but well worth it.Was very glad to see so many mixed couples (mostly gringo/mexicana) marching. Many of us from TJ do not have novias with visas so we attached thier pics to our signs. I hope people got the message of the ridiculous nonsense involved in this battle waged by the border idiots.Spending millions of dollars to chase after people who clean restrooms, cook, pick produce and in general do jobs nobody wants to do.Meanwhile we have miserable quality health care and understaffed police protection in most major cities. |
