I've heard mention of this working holiday visa, can anybody explain what it is and what the benefit is? I have a US and Canadian passport. Thanks!

jules,
You can use the WHV with your Canadian passport. It offers you the chance to work for a year (two 6-month stints, actually) once in your life.

You don't need an employer to sponsor you like you do for a regular work visa.

It permits more than just teaching work.

Since you can get it in about 2 weeks, you can hit the ground running if someone hires you right away. Work visas take 4-8 weeks to get.

The other benefit is you dont need a university degree and you can do other jobs outside English teaching. It is not designed to be a full work visa but allows you to experience different countries and work to pay your way for one year.

There are about seven countries that have WHV exchange agreements, not all necessarily with Canada: Australia, New Zealand, Japan Korea, France, Germany and the United Kingdom.

Both Glenski and I are in Japan on full visas (spouse and permanent resident) FWIW and know about working in Japan if thats where you are headed.

Americans are not eligible for working holiday visas so you have to apply for WHV through a foreign embassy in Canada.

They are not eligible for the Working Holiday visa only. There is no bilateral agreement between the US and other countries so young people on WHV are not allowed to work in the US and US nationals can not work in other countries on reciprocal terms. They can apply for other working visas depending on their eligibility however, but not WHV.
