There's a place called The Red Fly in Colonia Roma, Mexico City. My brother-in-law is supposed to put on another photo exhibit, but I'm not sure if it will be this day or not. Either way, who's up for some pints? |

Im always up for a pint, and since its not a holiday weekend, I might actually be able to meet all of you in person! Saludos, Sami |

since I am more or less "back from the dead" (meaning Im finally getting over a really bad bout of bronchitis - it really is true that the American Asma Asso. says "If you can't breathe, nothing else matters.") you can count me in.
Not a holiday weekend in Mexico, but its Memorial Day weekend in the States.... man, I have such an antojo for BBQ! Maybe we can talk about a joint Canada Day/US Independence Day bash for the weekend around July 1 and 4. We would need a manly-man of course to supervise the BBQ |

Ok then, since we have some agreement, would the Red Fly be okay? more about it at http://www.fodors.com/miniguides/mgresults.cfm?destination=mexico_city@101&cur_section=nig&property_id=422149
It's in Colonia Roma at Orizaba 145, at Zacatecas street. Lots of parking nearby.
Shal we say 7-ish? We'll wait around for you this time Freddy. sorry about La Faena. Not sure how we missed each other. PM me and I'll give you my cell number.
Glad to see that 'dead' was nothing permanent for you Leigh. Where's the Dominion Day/Independence Day affair going to be...out in Toluca? |

Freddy, are you manly enough to work Leigh's grill? Apparently, there's an opening. I don't think I'm up for the job.
BBQ...Canada Day...mmm. Who volunteers to bring some fireworks? I'd say that's an American specialty. In Canada, we like sparklers....at a safe distance of course.
My friends and I back in Ottawa had a tradition of mixing up a batch of Beaver Juice. Basically, Long Island Iced Tea, but you mix it up inside a Coleman cooler with ice for portability, and march it around the city like the Ark of the Covenant. I think I can import at least part of that tradition.
Hey Samantha...why don't you come out to meet us all? |

Guy, you know how much I would love to do that but do you know the actual distances between where I am and where y'all are? It's apparently over a 20 hour bus ride in each direction! (correct me if I am wrong) How does a girl keep her make-up and hair-do intact for 20 hours each way and make it back to work on Monday morning looking fresh? I love the DF as I have spent considerable time meandering about in the past. Cool place. |

Me? grilling? cooking?
I'm afraid my experience with cooking anything is limited to boiling water, operating a toaster oven (to make toast!), and setting the timer on the microwave. I think I'd mess up everything if left in charge of the BBQ. What I miss is...eating the results!
Hmm, I reread the thread, now I'm confused. Is everyone meeting at a bar, or doing the bbq thing? or is that for two different events? |

Geez..... Both of you - Guy and Sam - are such wimps. Sparklers and you cant travel more than 20 minutes??? !Hijole!
Looks like July 1 is a Sat... if we can put together a big shindig, it would have to be that day. I have the perfect location. There is a lot across from my house, with no house (but with a kind of a semi-covered patio area and GRASS!) It never occured to me to be anything more than a lot until I saw a party there on Children's Day. I asked one of my neighbors about it and he told me the owner lives "in the pink house" Havent had a chance to catch the owner yet to see what he would charge.
If its not ridiculous, it would be great. We can store stuff at my house and quite a few can crash there as there is a lot of space. I have one extra bed and a queen air mattress (gotta check it as its been in storage for a while), but if you bring an air mattress or colchoneta and a blankie, you should be fine (unless youre like me and your back cant handle "roughing it" anymore). Best of all its free.
Would definitely have to be potluck and I know someone with a grill
To make this work, I would think we would need a min of 10 to 15 folks. I know of 7 Canadians/Americans in Toluca personally. (if I can get half of them with their families, that could cover a lot) I know there are more, but finding them sometimes is a problem. but I know a few things to try. Guy... Im still worried about your claim that you can convince chilangos to come out into the savage forest here. I mean, listen to Samantha! |

I love Mexico! I painted my house in Chochola, Yucatan purple. A purple palapa!! Med. purple with dark purple trim.
My wife didnt want her house in Uman, Yucatan painted purple or pink. However, she let me paint it bright yellow with the mortar between the blocks painted black. FREAKY!!!! There are a lot of places in the States that restrict the color of the houses. The Mexicans dont believe that someone can tell you what color you have to paint your house. |

Yeah I like that any one Mexican family can paint their house whatever colour they like. Unfortunately, the neighbours can be a problem if they have differing tastes. I'm going to take a picture today of a monstrosity of colour clash in my neighbourhood that demonstrates a strong need for a Good Taste Enforcement Brigade of the Mexican army.
We need a pig cooker for the Toluca BBQ. Anyone out there from the Carolinas? A teacher from South Carolina once described what a pig cooker is. This thing is so big it needs a trailer hitch. It is so large and gets so greasy that automatic car washes in the Carolinas have to put No Pig Cooker signs up.
I'm sure I can get some chilangos out. There are a few non-narcos out in Metepec that might want to come too. Why don't you make a formal announcement Leigh, so we can get the ball rolling. Such an event deserves it's own thread in big red letters. |

This Sam can definately try to make it for a Canada Day/Independence Day party! I dont have sparklers, but I make a wicked Canadian flag cake with whipped cream and strawberries... |
