Oh, sure, you can live on the salaries in Qatar. You can save money, too. But you can't live NICE and save money. The Gulf is changing. |

10K/month and free housing works out to $2800+$800 (rent in any decent place)+$1200 (taxes)=$4800/month in U.S. terms. But is Doha super-duper expensive? |

I think the answer to that is pretty obvious dmb. It has been all downhill, I'd say - especially as refers to working conditions versus pay/benefits. Now it is longer hours and bigger classes and the pay scale hasn't moved up at all while the benefits are shrinking.
The only upside that I have seen is that there are more jobs now. But definitely not better jobs... mostly on the 'bad job' end of the scale.
That said, you can still stash away cash if you want to. (though those that do not live/invest with dollars have taken a worse hit)

Life is VERY expensive here now in Doha, while the rate of inflation has risen by almost 8% salaries in most places have stayed the same. Most people I know are feeling the pinch right now, who knows what will happen in the months/years to come.... |

Can you give some specific examples? |

When the price of food goes up even by a dirham or so, all of this adds up. Although I'd have to say that the people who feel the pinch more are those who have a housing allowance as opposed to accomodation, having said that though there was some kind of law (I think- feel free to correct me, fellow dohalites) that stopped landlords increasing rents by more than 10% each year but it's too late since many people are having to dip into their salaries to cover the rent. Furnished 1 bedroomed appartments are going for around 6000 QR. School fees increase every year, renting a car for example is at least around 1000QR per month.
It goes back to what has been discussed many times here, make sure you have a good package before coming out here and that you have accomodation as opposed to the allowance. Friends of mine who work at the international schools like Doha College etc, or Rasgas, Dolphin and Qatar Foundation seem to have very good packages...........
My advice to anyone especially to single people, is not to accept a starting salary of less than 10000 QR per month- this country is certainly not short of money. |

On a housing provided contract (4 bed room villa in a nice compound), with 32K QAR monthly salary and 38K QAR annual vacation allowance certainly working in Qatar is not bad and some call it luxurious.
But not worth the headache as I have QP as my customer. So I am leaving. QP is the worst customer you could ever have with their politics and red tapes. They're swimming with money, so getting projects finished on time is not on their list of priority. Getting home at 2:30 is. |

You're leaving? Can I have your job? QP might give you some headaches, but you could buy a lot of aspirins with that salary.

to dmb, I am involved in project management.
And to younggeorge, believe me, the money is not worth the hassle. At the end of the day, it's happiness. I would be happier making 10K a month with a little apartment but getting job satisfaction. Seriously. |

True but I can think of 101 things to do with a 32QR a month salary, buy property, invest, pay off student loan etc......... |
