There is no "long term Z visa", only a one year renewable one.

The Z visa I was issued from Australia was single entry but the time is open ended. Meaning I can stay in China for as long as I want on the 1 visa. My Z visa is valid until I decide to leave the country. The duration of my vissa says 000days.

Sorry to tweak your balloon but I have been asked by some recruiter to explain why my passport shows no work visa any more; they didn't believe my residence permit was "genuine"; in fact they have 3 westerners in their pay that still have twelve-month work visas issued last year...
I was as surprised as you may now be; it seems some employer still get work visas and separate green residence permits for their non-Chinese staffers. These employers may all be private enterpreneurs that run training centres and similar ventures.

I pointed out to them that they could check with the PSB whether my residence permit took care of a work visa, and they did. They were then satisfied.
