|
|
I am thinking of heading over to Bangkok, and wonder if anyone who's worked in China AND Thailand can offer up any comparisons.
I am used to a Wall St system and note Wall St is in BKK. Are there any other similar schools? You can make up to 2000 US $ here in such schools.
It would seem BKK is more comforable than most Chinese cities including even Shanghai. Here in SZ it's almost impossible to find English magazines, Chinese who can and want to speak English, or Western foreigners. But it is very cheap to live and you can save a lot here.
A lot of BKK jobs specify teaching kids. Is it realistic to teach only adults?
Are there reputable CELTA and such courses there?
Sorry for all the mundane questions. If I can help with China info let me know. I've had 2.5 years here in Guangzhou, Shanghia and now SZ. |

I have lived and worked in both. Thailand offers a great quality of life and lots more stuff is available in English. I only left to study in China and still really missed the lifestyle I had in Bangkok a lot. I am working here in China to live on while I study. I guess the main difference is money. I was teaching 27+ hours in Bangkok to earn 30,000baht, and had to pay 9,000 for accommodation. Here I only teach 16 hours, have free accommodation and earn over 4,000 yuan. So here I can save, which I didn't really manage much in Thailand. But, the quality of life I had was soo much better, much less staring.....So I think its worth it. And lots of jobs pay a lot more than I was on. The Thais are super-friendly and i certainly had a lot of Thai friends among the teachers, something i can't say about here, although the Chinese students on the course I study on are great. |

I never knew you could make that much. I thought that you'd be likely to make something like $500CAD per month. Well I don't have a degree either. I was told that having no degree, all I need is to be out of South East Asia all together in order to get a Non Imm-B visa. Only gotta do a border run every 90 days. Beats the tourist visa run. (you can correct me if I'm wrong). Can you actually make more money in Thailand than in China? I will have one years teaching experience when I'm done this contract and I have a TESOL certificate. Does that increase my chances of finding a good job? As far as you go vancanman, I wish you luck in Thailand if you go. I have a feeling you'll do pretty good if you have teaching experience. If anyone has any advice for someone with no University degree, let me know. See ya. |

If you can make that much money in China... and if money is your primary concern, you may wish to continue your stay in China...
Again, how many hours do you teach per week in order to make 2000$?
I guess if you try really hard... it may be possible that make that amount here as well (in BKK). I've met a french cook who worked in international school. He was paid 67 thousand baht.... so around 1650$
I also know a guy who is working in an international school as a soccer coach. He gets free accomodation and teaches some extra classes... he makes around 2000$, though I'm not sure if he was honest... he was drunk when he said that:)
When it comes to teaching English in international schools... the boons there are that you get a fairly long paid vacation and your wage is fairly high in comparison to normal schools... around 40-60 thousand baht, I think. (1000-1500$). |

Kerrilee, you don't seem to have much luck with salaries...
I used to work in Shenzhen (about two years ago) before moving to Bangkok. In that time, my salary has nearly doubled.
In China, I worked 25 hours a week for RMB7000 a month... My apartment cost me just under 2000. I also worked 6 day weeks.
In Bangkok I earn about B54,000 a month working 21 hours a week. I work five days a week and have all weekends off. My apartment (which is well flash) puts me back B7500.
Life in Bangkok is great. Sure the money will never compare to Japan or Korea, but life is easy and money goes far.
That said, I really miss my friends in Shenzhen, and try visit them as much as possible (easy to do with my 11 weeks holiday ) |
