Call me Ishmael. Although I usually go by 'Raoul', and am an administrator and casino greeter at an online forum called "Raoul's China Expat Saloon." I'd like to make you aware of a bad situation currently playing out at an English school here in China.
Our forum recently ran Help Wanted ads for an entity called "Dr. Paul's Language School," an English school for Korean students based in Qingdao. The jobs looked pretty good, and our ads produced a number of responses from among our members and readers.
Eventually, several of our members received job offers. These typically took the form of phone or e-mail communications confirming the job offer, as well as a paper hard-copy of the contract, ready for the teacher's signature.
Some time afterwards, many of those who had been hired received e-mails from Dr. Paul's stating that the job offers were being withdrawn and that the contracts sent before would not be honored. Absolutely no explanation was given for this action; it was just "We're taking our job back, buh-bye."
This bad faith on the part of Dr. Paul's has caused and is causing some financial loss and hardship among those who were its victims. Most of these people had turned down other offers, rented apartments, and taken other actions that typically go with starting a new job.
Before even opening its doors, Dr. Paul's English School in Qingdao has demonstrated itself to be an employer that respects neither the agreements it makes with its teachers, nor the teachers with whom it strikes agreements.
We encourage all teachers in China to place Dr. Paul's English School on their "Do Not Apply" list, and to take extreme caution in any dealings they may ever have with this school.

I can confirm that these events really took place. One fellow teacher was suckered into this "Dr. Paul" thing and passed on a number of other offers;
Once they pulled the offer, he found himself in a bit of financial strain not to mention visa-related issues.
Please beware. |

Dr. Paul�s is not to be believed!
They looked at our resumes, called us and conducted an interview, confirmed that we were hired, and sent us contracts. In a telephone call several days later, their representative again confirmed that we were �on board.�
Almost two weeks later, after other options had been foreclosed, Dr. Paul�s sent an email saying all was off: this with no explanation.
I cannot recommend the outfit to anyone as you may well find yourself losing valid opportunities when falsely issued a contract by Dr. Paul�s. You could arrive there expecting to go to work, and find the good �Dr.� has changed his/her/its mind. Other people who have been dealing with the �leader� there are now reporting that he does not pay on time or as agreed.
In a way, I�m glad we didn�t get further into the mess than we did. |
