I sincerely apologize if this has been posted before... but how do you get a work visa if you want to teach English independently? I'm trying to form an exit strategy from the eikaiwa scene and know some lucky and clever ex-eikaiwa slaves have been successful in running mini-schools out of their apartments. but are these all people who are either married or working illegally? Or is there some kind of "entrepreneur visa" you can use in this case?
I'm not asking about the feasiblity of teaching privately; I just want to know about the visa issue for the moment. thanks |

No there is no such visa
There is a self sponsored visa but you already need to have had a working visa, have several employers and prove a minimum income ti m immigration.
Business visa is for people who want to set up a branch of a foreign company in Japan and requires you hire two employees full time. |

I have a "self sponsered" visa. But, even that term is misleading. I've heard it referred to as "multiple sponsor", which seems more accurate to me. As Paulh mentioned, you need contracts. Even if you have 50 private students a week and are making more than enough money, you still have nothing to show immigration.
I provided immigration 2 contracts, a profit and loss statement from the company which is my largest contract, and my previous year's taxes. The sponsor is probably listed as the company with which I have my largest contract, although they are unaware of sponsoring me.
If you want to work independently, try to get a 3 year visa while you are still employed at, and sponsored by, your eikaiwa. Then, if you want to try to work on your own, you've got some time to build something up before you have to renew your visa. It's not easy, but not impossible either. |
