Greetings,

Does Al - Rajhi (European Centre) still exist? I used to work for them in Jubail and Riyadh and have seen a website, but can't confirm how old it is.

Aidan Chalk was the Director.

Is that outfit any good? There's been a lot of negative comments made about it here.

I spoke to them about 2 years ago. After the interview and being offered a position, this guy never spoke to me again. I e-mailed him a few times, but there was no answer. If he didn't want me he could have just let me know instead of keeping me dangling.

After about 6 months he phoned me while i was in Riyadh to offer me a job, i told him where he could stick it Mad

Don't know if it's still around but be warned that they get staff into Saudi on Business/Visit visas which clearly state on them that they're non-employment visas. European Center promises that once in Saudi you'll get a resident permit (iqama) so you can legally work and stay here but this never materialises. They keep you here on the same visa and keep renewing the visa on monthly basis. Ofcourse it's illegal but they don't care.

Teachers, when hired, are given return tickets which stays with the teachers. This suggests that they purposely don't want teachers to work for them long-term, otherwise they'd ask the teacher to give them the ticket which he/she can take back at the end of the contract. So, when the teachers have had enough, with the passport and ticket in their hand, they just leave.

Hope this helps the teachers out there considering working for european center. You've been warned.

They have a large ad for Instructors in EFL in the current 'Guardian Weekly'. I thought that was required reading for all you EFLers ?

Just looked at their site, quite nice looking but completely lacking in substance. They tell us very little about their services, their methodology or, frankly, themselves.

More info would be indeed useful.

If you look at it in Firefox you'll find that none of the links work so you don't get past the first page.

And to add to the fun the guy responsible for that actually puts his name on the home page!

Stephen Jones. I saw you laugh your head off once when going through savage turbulence on a Colombo-Dammam flight.

Surely you can't still be in Saudi...?

I'm a bit surprised the authorities haven't cracked down on this. As you say, it's strictly illegal.

But I agree with you: unless they have absolutely no choice, no teacher should agree to come to KSA on a business visa. I know people who have done this, and although they did have the bus visa converted to a bona fide work visa, it was a lot of extra hassle for them.

Still in Saudi; taking another Dammam-Colombo flight in 13 days. No idea what I was laughing at, probably something I'd read.

When was the flight. I've done it about twenty times so I'm not going to recognize you just from that.
