I have spent two years teaching in Seoul and will be coming to Hong Kong this fall. Would someone be kind enough to give a reasonable estimate on how much I should bring for the first month's expenses?

Nothing lavish, just a first month quote on the cheap.

Thanks a million in advance.

This will all depend on why you are coming and what you are going to do. It is quite expensive if you are going to be looking for accommodation as you have to pay 2 months security deposit and one month's rent in advance. Even in a hotel if you are staying a month they ask for a security deposit or your credit card. For the NET scheme they give you about $50 000 whic has to be paid back each month during your first year but like everything else it can take a couple of weeks for it to be paid. I remember I found it quite expensive during those first few weeks but I can't remember how much I acually brought.

i brought $12000 for the first month but i already had accomodation lined up so that cut a big expense out. this amount was fine for setting myself up. but if you have to get a flat it will be much more. however if you go into a flat share it will cut your set up costs by alot.
