I found out too late! This school is notorious for firing foreign teachers unexpectedly and without due reason.. then, the process seems to be that the owner claims damage to the teachers apartment and other false accusations as a 'reason' to not pay the teacher for the hours worked the previous month. In my case there was a large amount missing from my pay on pay day and when I asked for the balance the owner was too busy to meet me, and fired myself and another teacher the following day.
The school holds 20 days salary and therefore owes me the missing amount from the previous month plus the following months pay.. a lot of money, a lot of teaching hours! Apparently this has been going on for a few years! The labour office's response was "AGAIN??" How is the school still in business? Well, I guess when you don't pay a teacher a large sum of money and then hire a new teacher that has no idea... it's money in the owner's pocket right??
So... take care. Everything was great and the owner was friendly and helpful, especially when I was not living in the school apartment. I made the mistake of moving in to find out that she was entering the apartment (which I paid rent for) without my knowledge. When I made a request to ask me before entering my private space, her attitude changed. Shortly afterwards I was fired. I think she picked the wrong gaijin this time, I expect my payment and will go through all of the legal processes to get it but what a headache...

I had a similar experience in Korea. I was number 2 out of 3 foreign teachers in one year who had the same problem.
The first teacher just quit.
After 3 months of trying to get some money, I went to the Immigration ("What again? We must have a meeting" and then nothing). I directly approached the schools where I was teaching (I later found out illegally) for some money, but she countered by threatening to sue the schools if they gave me any, as the contract was with her; went to the board of education and finally the police. Everyone sympathised but told me it was a civil matter and that to sue I had to be a resident in the district where I was being turfed out of my apartment because of her non-payment of the rent! I gave up.
Teacher 3 did NOT give up and made her bankrupt.
So I wish you luck!!! |

Someone has to do something so that the school does not continue to do this to the teachers. It's enough of a challenge to live in a foreign culture without extra worries and financial problems to deal with. Schools dealing with foreign teachers should be more considerate and not take advantage of teachers. |
