Hi - I've been living and working in Istanbul for a while (~2 years) but I'm interested in getting a CELTA certificate. I currently have a BA in English and a TEFL certificate, but as I'm looking to stay in Turkey for the long-term, I think a CELTA would be nice to have.

Does anyone have any advice regarding where to get the CELTA in Istanbul? Costs? Is it worthwhile?

Thanks.

Why would you need a CELTA certificate when you have a TEFL certificate?

It's an honest question-- what's the difference?

Well, I'm probably moving to South Turkey next year and I figure having a CELTA will allow me to work in an elementary school or something similar. It hasn't been necessary in Istanbul as there are plenty of jobs and I've been happy where I'm at. I'd just like to make myself more marketable because I think the market will be much tighter where I'm going to be moving.

Am I wrong? Will I be able to work legally in a Turkish school with just a TEFL certificate? I don't think I can, but if I can save 900 pounds (yikes!) and not get the CELTA, I'm sure I can find plenty of other things to buy/do with that money!

Cheers.

Thanks for the link, dmb.

With your degree in English and an CELTA you can work legally in schools.
PS it is 900 dollars not pounds.

I only have a 240 hour (plus 40 hr practicum) TEFL cert from CAnada and I spent 2 years in a kolej. Why would a CELTA be necessary? It's just a particularly well-recognised brand name for a regular TEFL cert.

That's what I thought. Also, I thought the A in CELTA meant 'adults,' so how would that help getting work in a primary school?
