Yes, it derives from the Turkish phrase Ver Siz, meaning 'without giving'. I don't quite know how it evolved into a term denoting opposition though, but I can speculate that it has something to do with wild Turkmen on horseback in combat, pillaging- not giving, but rather taking.

Ah, very astute, Yaramaz, though I take issue with your history. Turkish horsemen were, of course, never wild. Indeed, centuries of a foreign smear campaign that has been carried out to make Turks look like barbarians so they can be blamed for the Armenian thing and kept out of the EU might make you believe they were wild, but in fact, all Turkish horsemen were polite, hospitality, and hot.

And they loved all foreigner people and were never racist.
