Mexico is Region 4. And "multi-regiional" DVD players are easy to find (often "multi" in this context means just Region 4 and 1, but some of the cheaper Chinese or Malaysian models play ALL regions). I've also seen a lot of DVDs (the discs themselves) here that are dual: both 1 and 4.
VHS videos are the same as in Canada and the US. You might actually find a few beta machines in some rincones They died a much slower death here than in most places I know of. |

Hi Seanie!
I've got an LG Dvd player that plays all regions and vcd's and everything. And it was one of the cheapest ones around.
The VHS format for the Americas is NTSC. The other one (I think only in France, UK, Oz and NZ) is called PAL. You can also get dual format video players, but they'd cost more, and are probably pretty rare these days. |

If you bring a portable DVD player with you to Mexico, make sure it is multi-regional; it used to be that DVDs released here were both region 1 and 4, but lately I've noticed that more and more of the discs are region 4 only. |

Hi L! (respecting your anonymity here:-)) How's Bogota treating you? Actually I think France is a bit of the odd man out in Europe. They use SECAM instead of PAL... but your old stomping ground - Espaa (where I am temporarily) - uses PAL too. |

If MixtecaMike would come back around, he could probably point us to a "crack" for computer DVD players. Most computer players can play any region, but then you have to choose one and can only change the setting like 4 times, after that it stays on the last setting.
By the way the price of DVD players has dropped condiserably, I just bought one for 399 pesos! Most of the video rental shops in this little corner of Mexico seem to be phasing out Videos and only getting new things in in DVD. |

Hi Mel! (hope you got my PM) You're absolutely right about that. Mike told me about a way to "de-regionalise" computer players, but I don't remember the details... Three posts in one day! I'm going back to lurking:-) |

No Seanie,
We need your wisdom! Don't be a stranger. Pop over to Guy's post about how (if any) has Mexico changed since Fox's election. I'm still thinking about my reply. I'm sure people would be interested in your experience as well.
(and yes I got the PM) |

My computer is locked into region 1, but I've found that if I run this software first I can play a region 4 DVD... http://www.remoteselector.com/ |

Videos? What are these things of which you speak? *Thinks* maybe you mean video cds? No wait! I think I remember seeing some video tapes in a museum...
You are absolutely correct that the video system here is different to anywhere else (except some of the French territories) but thankfully when it comes to DVDs they are region two the same as the rest of Europe.
If anyone could offer up more details on the way to de-regionalise your pc dvd player you would have my ever-asking gratitude!

There are a lot of different software programs that will turn your PC dvd player into region free. Just google "region free dvd software".
Here's a link to one list of different programs, many of them completely free.

Here's a question about the dvds you find in Mexican pirate stands. Many of them are labeled by region, either 1 (U.S.), 4 (Mexico), or both...but, if they are pirated versions, isn't the region encoding disabled already anyway? My stand alone dvd player is only region 4, but it's never had a problem playing any disc. My PC player has the region restrictions broken, but I forgot how I did it, probably using some simple freeware from somewhere. |

No. I - er, I mean, people I know, have bought pirate DVDs that were region 4 only and would not play on a region 1 machine. |

My most recent "non-original" DVD purchase has two movies on the same disc: La Era de Hielo 1 and La Era de Hielo 2. What I find interesting is that on the first movie I can change the spoken and subtitle languages using the menu settings on my DVD player, but on the second movie on the same disc, I can't. |
