Hi all,
After using the seach engine on the sight, I sadly discovered that the previous "what to bring list" is gone- which is a shame as I am coming to Jakarta in a few weeks. Anyway, can anyone make some suggestions on what would be a great thing to bring down? |

Looking at your post history, you're American? Make sure you bring the right $100 bills. |

In Jakarta clothes and shoes are not a problem but elsewhere in Indonesia getting big sizes can be difficult. If you are an avid reader then bring your books if poss - English language books are very expensive indeed and the selection isn't good. Also perfumery (for men and women) is expensive so hit the duty free on the way here.
Apart from that, the only thing I have a problem getting hold of at an affordable price is breakfast muesli - oh, and mosquito repellents here are damn effective but after-bite remedies, for some strange reason, are crap.
Electricity is 230V a.c. 50Hz - I guess you probably know this already but I did once meet a newbie teacher who shipped over a load of 110V appliances from the states. |

Actually, I have one more thing that I am depating with myself: should I bring my computer? In Korea is is usually easier to just buy a new one upon arrival, but I realize that Indonesia is far different. In your expert advice, should I bring it? |

I assume you mean laptop - yes bring it, you can get every type of computer/laptop/PDA etc here but prices are relatively high.
And...I'll have a large Bintang (no ice) |

I actually meant a desktop, I have a rather uber (and rather heavy) system that I've built.
And you've got it, one bintang with no ice. |

If that's the case just bring the components and pick up a case and keyboard here - JKT has plenty of 'electronics' malls and they have everything in all shapes and sizes. |

I have given a little thought to your question and come up with this tentative list of things to bring:
ESSENTIAL
mosquito net
snake repellent soap
candles
telescope
waterproof map case
revolver and ammunition
military compass, brass
pocket watch
playing cards
the Lord Ponsonby pith helmet
powdered milk
assorted teaspoons
two or three shoe horns
box commode (recommended brand: The Trumpeter)
cognac
Bryant and May tiger matches
RECOMMENDED
folding parasol
shooting stick
hip flask
cigarette case
toast rack
pearl-handled fruit knife
wind-up gramophone
cane fishing rod, in canvas bag
a Bilston enamel pill box
USEFUL
badminton racket
coal scuttle
sugar tongs
concertina or banjo (but not both)
pictures of HM The Queen (as presents)
napkin rings
folding barometer
folding sewing machine (Wilcox & Gibbs, New York)
a selection of gentleman's Piccadilly wing collars
brass/copper warming pan, with wooden handle
jelly mould
folding rocking chair
occasional table, oval
Darwins On the Origin of Species (for arguments with local chaps)
gravy boat
folding cake stand
a set of brass postal scales.
I expect other old Indonesia hands can make some more suggestions. |

Damn it all to hell! I prefer gin greatly over cognac. I find that only strumpets and the french drink cognac. Should I bring small gifts to tip my porters? |

"Claret is the liquor for boys; port for men; but he who aspires to be a hero must drink brandy."
(Dr Johnson)
In my experience, all you need to give your porters is a good kicking. |

I'm planning on bringing my laptop to Indonesia, but I know it's a different voltage there. Yes...I know a quick google search would of confirmed what voltage Indonesia uses (I believe 220....I forgot.) but I wanted to know what others were using over there? I purchased my laptop in USA....so I'll need some type of converter to transfer proper voltage? I really don't want to fry my laptop....the warranty is crap, I don't believe it would cover that. |

JUST an idea, but I know that DESKTOPS come with built in voltage adapters. Furthermore, none of my friends in Korea have had any issues (that I know of). It may be the same way, but if no one answers your question before I get off work, then I will find out for you.
Hey, when are you coming down? It'd be nice to find another rookie to explore with...I'll bring the pith helmets. |

Perhaps. But I don't have the room to bring a desktop. Thus the laptop becomes very handy ((Especially for that long flight. Now I just wish I could find a longer battery....))
I'm just afraid of buying the wrong converter...if thats even what it's called. I want to be able to plug my laptop into my friends outlet at her home, but my laptop runs of USA voltage, so it's not equipped for Indonesian voltage. Ofcourse, it's very important I don't fry my laptop. The warranty sucks, in short. |
