OK, it has been a little while but when I first came to Japan this man came to my house and said i must pay some money Surprised . I don't speak alot of japanese but my friend said he is an NHK man who wants me to pay for them. I said "What?" and he said please pay only 1000 yen but I had no money so he said "only 1000 yen". How can i pay if i have no money? Confused but some people say they never pay. Can I be arrested if I don't pay. Should I pay? what do you guys and girls think?

Don't pay. NHK fees are considerably more than 1000 yen. Just tell them you don't have a TV. If you pay something they will be back soon for more money. The NHK collection people make their money off you, so they are more than persistant. More and more Japanese are choosig not to pay for NHK as they are not interested in the programming and there have been some high profile scandals at the top of the organization.

They will tell you that according to the law you have to pay, and actually it is, but just like labor standards laws it is not enforced. There is currently no penalty.

When I lived out in the inaka, the NHK man paid me a visit. I tried to pull the old "nihongo wakarimasen" card, then he pulled out a book with multiple translations (English, Portugese, Korean, Chinese, Tagalog, and I think Russian) for the request to pay. Crying or Very sad

But my Japanese friend suggests that if the NHK man does come by, just don't answer the door! He'll go away eventually. Exclamation

C'mon you guys! Everyone seems to have all sorts of creative stories bragging about how they got rid of the JWs knocking at the door -- but no one has any advice on how to get rid of the NHK man? Laughing

My doorbell is broken, and I have no desire to get it fixed. The NHK Man, will just ring it until you open the door.

What is NHK? It is the National Broadcaster in Japan. Like the BBC in Britain, and the CBC in Canada. Except, in Canada, the CBC is funded by the government, through taxes. If they want to have a public broadcaster publically supported, they should tax people for it, not harrass some.

I got the English flyer put in my mailbox, and I must say the fees are very high. I wouldn't care if I never watched Japanese TV again, although I DO own a TV for my DVD player. Doesn't matter though, you are 'supposed' to pay, but I refuse.

Don't pay the damned NHK door-to-door guy. If you feel it's your responsibility to pay, have the NHK guy arrange to have the bills sent directly to your apt/house. Then pay at the post office or wherever it is you pay your bills. Door-to-door scamming is rampant, especially in the countryside.

Pay for NHK? Japanese TV is terrible, that is why I got satellite.
Tell them when they put decent programs on, you'll pay.

The NHK man came to my old apt and my husband answered the door. Basically my husband didn't understand him, but told him to come back when I was there. The NHK guy came back and I told him we didn't have a TV. But he went outside and saw we had a SKYPerfect dish. So assumed we must have a TV if we have a dish. He came back the next day and said this in broken English. To which my husband said, "We're military." (We aren't though) and the guy just left. He never came back. Maybe he was afraid of American military people. I dunno. But it worked for us, so maybe you could try it...
