After having crossed the street here in a city of 10 million, I was approached, not the first time, to see whether or not I could take on some part time classes at an elementary school.

The man spoke in broken English, to which I responded in Chinese "sorry, I can't speak English, I'm German (I am Canadian with zero German blood, yet for some reason all I could think of saying was that I was German)". The man switched to Chinese, and informed me that there were some schools looking for part time teachers to do some brief summer camps.

I explained that German is quite different from English. I also said that there was no way that I could teach, German or English, because I have no experience, nor any training. The man assured me that this wouldn't be a problem.

After continuously refusing his offer for several minutes, citing both linguistic handicaps and lack of experience, I finally accepted his number, after denying him the right to mine, and promised to pass it along to my Italian friend.

So, when you're fully booked, and offered more work, and can speak a little Chinese, try this out, and see just how demanding qualifications in some areas of the country are becoming. For now, this pseudo-German just can't be bought for a whopping 9.7 Euro an hour! Maybe for 200 kuai I just might consider teaching, and my lifelong drem vil finali kum tru!
