Check the General Africa Forum - I seem to recall some threads on Libya there. Also, check with the British Council as they are currently advertising for a teacher to be based in Tunis.

As I recall you are working on your MA. The only jobs that I have noticed for these countries have not required one - which may be bad news for you salarywise.

The only Tunisia jobs that I have seen were for AMIDEAST. For Libya it has been an oil company (I believe) that hires for short term contract out of the UK.

I think the drawback will be that both countries are very expensive to live in and the jobs have seemed to be rather low pay. (Libya better than Tunis for pay)

Bell has been advertising for Libya for a while, at easonable salaries. Look for their ads on TEFL.com - I think they're still there. If they've gone, check again in a month or two- they recur.

Oil company jobs in Marsa Brega - I forget the current contractor - are a pretty isolated life, but good savings opportunities and lots of time off - one month in three, I believe. It used to be one month on, one month off, but you won't get that anywhere any more.

Thanks for all your posts so far. It sounds as if oil companies are a promising avenue worth looking into...

Also, does anyone have experience of working for AMIDeast or the British council? What are the conditions and benefits? What are the restrictions on nationalities?

The reason I want to be there: My husband is of North African origin, and I want to spend at least 2 years near my son's extended family, giving them a chance to know each other, and giving my son a chance to become fluent in his second language. I have several years of experience teaching at universities in Korea - and was hoping that college or university positions might be available, but I'm willing to look at other avenues if the money and holidays are reasonable! Smile

As VS mentioned, I'm doing an MA and won't be in a position to travel there for at least a year - but I'm trying to do my homework and planning in advance.

Try doing a search for AMIDEAST and BC here and on the North Africa board and see if anything comes up.

I wouldn't expect glorious pay from either of them.

Garyounis University (Benghazi) used to offer reasonable terms and conditions - not great pay but reasonable hours, good accommodation and opportunities for paid overtime. That's going back a few years, so I don't know how they are these days. Try looking up their website.

Try the oil companies or Bell. The council will not pay as well as they require teachers not academics. If you do not have a teaching qualification (an MA is not considered a teaching qualification but most respected organizations) then you will not get hired. Try NOC (National Oil Corporation in Libya) The conditions in the desert of Libya are basic but lieable. Normally you would work a 6 and 2 (6 weeks on and two weeks off) in the desert. If they offer anything less it can become an insane place to work as communications are poor and there are no shops in the desert!!

Between Tripoli and Tunis, I prefer Tunis, even if they do not pay well as Tripoli!.

They say that it is easy to enter Libya, but it is difficult to get out!

Definitely, Tunis as a work environment, and social life is much better than Libya, especially concerning social life and individual freedoms. In addition, Tunisia is a touristic country where you will enjoy your life and stay.
You know in Libya, his 'excellency' Colonel Gadafi changes his mind 7 times a day for his country rules and regulations.

...and armed people, and you can be stopped by anyone armed pretending to be a Police officer or a security agent without showing any identity and he can take your money or your car (especially if it is 4x4). The other things, you will see a lot of check-points in roads of Libya, mainly the isolated ones in the desert, and you never know what will happen to you, especially if your eyes are blue/green and not proteted by police or security for your safety. !!!

It used to be. But now things have changed to the worse, and Bangazi University is full of Egyptians, Iraqis, and Sunadese. The salary is very low and work environment is not that good!
