Have a holiday in Bulgaria. Sofia, Plovdiv and Veliko Turnovo are the obvious places. You can get to all of these places by train from Sirkeci. Get the sleeper at 10pm. Or a bus.

Get off the beaten track. Come to our place

www.skavivascot.hit.bg

Opening page is at the moment in Bulgarian. Look for the button top left that says EN

Click on that and you will get the pages in English.

My pic is not here but you will see Mrs scot47 and our chateau.

and one's res. permit was expired, would said person be able to get there without a hassle?

Another possibility

look at

www.holidaystobulgaria.com

We are there too, under the heading 'rural'. We live in the village of Madara.

Best way from Istanbul ? Sleeper from Sirkeci. Choose Sofia, Plovdiv, Veliko Turnovo or Rousse. The last two on the route to Bucharest. Thew first to on the route to Sofia/Belgrade,

I think the said person should sort out a new permit before crossing any borders. However, if you are a personable chap, you may not have any problems at the border.
I know a couple of blokes who over stayed their visas by a few months. They just paid their fine, stayed in Greece for a night and then came back in the next day. It's all about luck really.

The hassle would be paying the fine.

No. The hassle would be being stuck at the border for ten hours while the border police play mind games with you.

Why does your employer not arrange a work permit?

My employers are figuring out some way to get it here, but it doesn't bother me that much as I have had an ikamet for about four and a half years. I used to just catch the train over to Greece for an hour and come back before l got my ikamet, but the border police aren't reallg big on letting people do that anymore.

get the service bus from metro just off the Square. It takes you to the station at Alibeykoy and on to the Bulgarian border. Jump off the bus and wait for one coming in the opposite direction- just a few mınutes and it brings you back to Istanbul. You can do this trip during the day or overnight.

No, we aren't. Everyone where I work (uni) is legal, and almost everyone where I used to work (dersane) is legal. I suppose it varies.

That was what we thought... If you're Canadian, you may be 'forced' to stay 24 hours in Bulgaria before being allowed to re-enter Turkey. Please check this before heading off. It may have changed since I've done it, but my experience was that the Yanks and Brits could cough up some money and go on their way (hip-deep in snow, on foot...!) but the Canadians, two of us, were not going to be allowed to return for 24 hours.

Perhaps it was the spirit of the holiday season, a feeling of compassion, etc.etc, or more likely, it was the Yank's quick thinking bribe ( a bottle of local whisky and a $20) that got our passports stamped and us sent merrily on our way.
