I may be moving to D.F. in August and wanted to know about a few of the neighborhoods around the city. Any information about Tlalpan, Condesa and San Angel would be great. Thanks! |

I've never been to Tlalpan, mostly because it's very far from the center of the city. San Angel is beautiful, with lots of traditional architecture and a famous Saturday Bazaar, but I expect that rents are very high there. It's in the southern part of the D.F. (where many of the "nicer" barrios are located), but not as far from the heart of things as Tlalpan. Condesa is a really cool part of the city, centrally located, with parks and cafes and bars and cultural events going on, sometimes even in the parks. I'd love to live there, but the rents would be a bit much for someone on an English teacher's salary. |

You might find a furnished room for rent in Condesa at under 2500 pesos, or a decent homestay. I like the area around around Parques Espana and Mexico.
San Angel is indeed pricey.
If you happen to be looking at housing ads, be careful that Tlalpan refers to either a delegacion or a colonia, and not avenida. You don't want to live on Avenida Tlalpan.

you pretty much don't want to live on any avenida in this city.
i second the other comments. tlalpan is far south, san angel a little more central but i've heard it's expensive, and condesa is very central but also pretty expensive. there are thousands of for rent signs in la condesa so i'm assuming the prices are dropping. it has been the hot place for young people for the last ?? years. guy, help me out here. maybe 5-10 years, and rents doubled, but i think the heyday is ending as vicente fox made it very easy for anyone to buy apartments and fewer people are renting. i have seen ads for ridiculously high rent in la condesa and then met someone who is sharing an enormous two bedroom apt with parking, one block from the park, for 2500 per person. that's very cheap.
good luck |

Yeah, Condesa got pretty hip over the last 10 years, so my wife reports. It's full of swank restaurants, nouveau riche, and telenovela stars.
I'd agree that fewer are renting because it's gotten much easier to buy. Calderon might attribute that to PAN, but I'd say it's more about bank competition lead by HSBC and Banamex, and an AMLO edict to restrict new building on the outskirts of the city.
Condesa is expensive, but you can still find some gems, like your example. Roma is a better pond to fish in I think. |
