Can the hydro, phone etc, give a copy of the bill before the due date. I want everything to be cleared up before leaving.

Does this mean no one pays anything? They just leave as is?

Have you tried phoning the various companies and arranging through them? Or do you want us to call them?

I can't remember what I did with all the bills but I know that the water bill was easy. The water office people came out to cut off the water and gave me a final bill on the spot so that I could just go to the office and pay it.

Hi Ava,

This might be too late for you but perhaps it could help others in the future. I actually had to leave Japan for another job before the next billing date for my Internet, cell phone and last pay check. You can have a Japanese friend pay these bills for you by signing a sheet with your friend and the company in question. All you need to do is go with your friend to the company and explain to them your situation. They will then have you fill out a form that your friend must sign as well. The only two conditions that I had to fulfill was stamping the stupid form with an inkan and also going to the post office and signing a sheet which sends my mail to my friend's address after a certain date.

For gas, electricity and water it is best to have a Japanese friend phone them and tell them the date on which you are leaving your house/apartment/residence. These companies will actually come to your door and give you a tally of your remaining bill. You can pay them in cash on the spot and they will even give you a print out receipt. This is probably the best way to pay your bills as it is more convenient.

Sody

I`ve had a couple of people that live near me mention that they would just pay the last one that they could while in Japan and just blow off the remaining balances. While I don`t find that to be honest, they contend that there are no repurcussions for one`s credit. I`m not sure whether or not to believe that line of thinking...and it`s out of the question for my own situation, but...
