It would seem that working in a university provides many advantages. What is the highest paying university job in Istanbul? Are the students alright? Why work anywhere else?

what about disadvantages. If you meet the critea the biggest disadvantage of working at 'the highest' paid is the amount of time you have to spend commuting or having to live miles out. |

I guess one means far from taksim??
What is the going rate for universities in istanbul on average, givin 2 years experience and a CELTA + degree???
Are there any universities closer to town??? |

| Yeditepe's pay isn't so hot-- new teachers (last year, anyway) are only offered part time 8 month contracts for about 1700 ytl-- not great at all. You can do better. |

Far from everything. Sabanci, the highest paying is in the middle of nowhere. I passed by it last night and there are still signs on the Motorway telling you how many more kms to Istanbul!
I hate to say this but 2 years experience + CELTA + Degree probably isn't enough for a uni job. But this is Turkey, there are no rules and it is about being in the right place at the right time and knowing the right people.

With bog standard qualifications all you are going to get is a crappy job in a prep dept at a private ''uni.''
Are the students allright? No private lise kids but a bit older.
Did you really think you could get the highest paying, best TEFL job in Ist when you are a 4 weeker? |

Some people prefer to teach people who want to leanr rather than kids who need to pass an exam. |

| actually what I want to do is find a university where I can work and do a masters degree in history. I was hoping to find a job teaching history eventually. I am in the process of figuring out which area of history is marketable in Turkey. |

Ataturk? Ottoman? Byzantium? Seriously you would have alot of competition with local lecturers. Maybe have alook at theuni website courses and see what courses they are offering on undergrad courses. |

the official, Turkish version of history: namely, they are the original race, they invented everything hundreds of years before anyone else, and the most definitely DID NOT, no siree, ever get involved in any nasty *accidental* ethnic cleansing of neigbouring ethnic groups, not ever.
And they invented the kebab.  |

As far as teaching history goes, 20th century american studies and international relations is what most people have been suggesting. This is a goal that is still a few years away. As is my teaching in the "best" university, obviously that was the key term that made your titties hot. I was hoping to find out the upper end of the spectrum is currently, so that I could gage the rest, including my present situation, with a clearer lens.
My interest has always been ancient and ottoman history but, as was mentioned above, those areas are given to locals before others.
The question remains: what is the upper end of the pay scale in istanbul? |
