My girlfriend and i are currently debating whether or not we should leave for CR (planning on moving to san jose to find a job teaching english) in early August or late august/first week of sept. Basically, I'm wondering if the job market will be any different depending on when we get there? Any reccomendations?

As far as I know it won�t make one bit of difference. The school year here runs from Jan to Dec when they take a month (or more) off for Xmas or their version of summer holidays.

Some language schools do hire teachers on a long term(6 mos.) contract but things come up and teachers leave early etc. etc.

Agencies run year round because businesses run year round.

Each university is on its own timetable so the beginning of the bimester depends on which uni you go to....

Ulatina in San Pedro is starting its new bimester on May 28th but Interamericana in heredia just had its break and started a new bimester (8 weeks) last week.

Every bimester classes can grow and the need for new teachers could come up at the last minute. So basically get a list prepared, get down here and start visiting the areas you�d like to work in and setting up interviews. Even if you don�t get full time work immediately. Subs are always needed.

For instance we have a full roster of teachers but with all the newly registered students, we now have about 5 intensive (4 nights a week) classes that don�t have teachers! This could happen at any time, so good luck with your search.

Where do you work that needs teachers?

I work at Ulatina in San Pedro, about 5 minutes from central SJ. I work full time (32 hours) per week and teach intensives and conversation classes. I make 4 mill colones per hour. and I love it !!!!

I will once again give an example of ��when to come�� ANYTIME !!

Our new bimester started last week, we have over 30 teachers on the roster, some new, some old. Even with all those teachers we are short! On Saturday the conversation classes started and as the students arrived on Sat. morning to register the class size grew and grew and at least 3 of the classes reached a size that it was necessary to split them. So this is what happens all the time. At this point 2 of the classes are covered but we still need a native speaking teacher who is here and ready to work for 4 hours on a Sat. morning.
This is why it�s important to keep in touch with all the places you interview with and if there isn�t a job available at that time, who knows what may happen next week.
