Here is the first offer i got from China. I understand GEVU is a recruiter...and I like how she says the salary is negotiable. But as a sickly green newb to China, what should i look out for, or question?

The "administrative tutor" (?) will be phone interviewing me. I surely will ask about the lodgings, and contract details....like paid time off, renewals, probation period etc. I've already emailed her back asking what the names of the schools are and what kind of schools they are- gov't, private, etc

But what do you all think about this?
(BTW, i am fully educated, certified, and experienced)

Some things to think about and/or to ask about:

1. When there is a salary range, generally the highest salary is meant for those with a PhD or Masters. The lowest range is for those who don't know to ask for more or for those with perhaps a Bachelor's in . . . something and little to no experience. I would think a teaching degree and experience should at least land you in the middle range, so you might clarify EXACTLY what is to be your salary and then you have to determine if you are happy with what they quote you.

2. Never let them tell "about" so many teaching hours or periods per week. Make it exact in the contract and then also exactly how much you will be paid for teaching beyond that stated amount. Also, if you can, make them tell you how many PERIODS you'll work per week, regardless of the length of the period. You'll thank me later.

3. Are there any extra hours you need to be aware of? Hours such as English corners, staff meetings, or office time? Are these included in your salary or is that overtime? Again, try to get as much EXACT wording in the contract as possible.

4. Ask for a detailed list of furnishings as well as linens, kitchen utensils, etc. Will there be a deposit taken out of your first pay? Which floor will your apartment be on? Off-campus or on-campus? Shared or single? Good A/C and heat? Hmmm, what else?

5. Three free meals. If you love crappy (usually) cafeteria Chinese food, then you're in luck, otherwise you might ask for a meal stipend instead (maybe 200rmb a month) so you can shop and cook for yourself. A box of cold cereal for breakfast can cost upwards of 50rmb per. That's over $5.00 US!! Little things like that can add up in a hurry if you're not careful.

6. Textbooks and other teaching materials: Often a teacher is brought into a school, shown where he/she will teach, given a piece of chalk and pushed into their first class. Are you prepared with plenty of English based games and activities? If nothing else, snag the Chinese English teacher's text so you can create speaking activities that parallel what he/she is teaching. Meet with them as often as you can to glean info from them and observe their classes whenever you have spare time.

7. Airfare: Clarify if they are buying a ONE-WAY ticket home for you next summer? Are they REIMBURSING your round-trip ticket? Or something else? It seems like lately that one-way is becoming more common. See if you can't negotiate that (say, 1/2 of your RT ticket reimbursed at Spring Festival, the other half at the end of the school year).

8. Start dates - check. What about your last day? Will you be paid during holidays? All of your pay? 70%? 50%? What about medical? What exactly does that mean? Will they pay should you have to go to an off-campus hospital? Sick days off? Paid?

Sadly, this is only the tip of the iceberg. You will NEVER be able to think of everything you need to know before getting here. But as much clarification and assurances IN WRITING you can get, the better off you'll be in the long run. Good luck!!

Dear OP,

GEVU has been discussed here ad infinitum. Please exercise extreme caution when using this recruiter....extreme caution and then some. If you were to throw a lit match into a field of hydrogen, it would be less dangerous, speaking metaphorically of course. Just check this board, do a search and you will see. And then do a check on the Net.

It seems to me that there was a whole thread about GEVU around here recently.....

Next, I believe that I know the school in Kushan to which you are referring. I don't want to discuss it openly, because there are different prevailing opinions, but if you were to PM me, perhaps then.

All the best and be careful,

HFG
