The school I'll be working at is 45 minutes past the last Metro stop, Rosario. Way the hell out in Atizapan. I take a bus from Rosario out to the campus and it takes about 45 minutes. Is it worth trying to live in Df or should I just live out there? They provide free housing for the first semester, so I'll take it but come January I'll have to find a place on my own. I'm thinking if I live toward the end of metro line 6 or 7 it might be ok.
Can any one suggest a neighborhood in northern DF that might be ok?

Just live out there...too much of a commute and you'll drive yourself nuts. You can always come into DF on the weekends.
Ask Freddy about long commutes... |

Long commutes will wear you out. I commute from Ecatepec to the Coyoacan area every day, and it averages 1.5 to 2 hours (sometimes longer) EACH way, on public transportation--combination of various micros and the Metro.
By the way, Atizapan...hmm...I have an appointment there later this afternoon. Right now I am trying to figure out how to get there. I'm hoping I can make it there in under two hours, starting off from the Coyoacan area.
Hey, Ernest, if it's Tec that you'll be working at, email me. I'd like to learn more about the school if I can.

Im the Queen of Atizapan Freddy, you and I have talked... and AjarnErnes, let me know if its the Tec as well, thats where I am... its definately not the most attractive place in the world, but I like living right near where I work... I wouldnt dream of commuting, it could take 2 hours to just get to Polanco in the traffic... some people here live in Satelite which has a bit more of a social scene and entertainment... Im happy to just commute to the city on the weekends. |

| I should mention that for a place in the middle of nowhere, Atizapan can be a little pricey rent-wise. The average for a single person apartment is $3000-$4000 pesos a month... furnished. About $1500- $3000 if youre sharing. There are some nice streets to live on, some streets where Ive been chased by packs of red-eyed street dogs, and some that I pretty much avoid. The rest of the area revolves around the Comercial. There is really nothing else. |

i went through atizapan a couple weeks ago on the way to a friend's ranch. it just made me really glad that i ended up teaching in Tec Cordoba. the only "nice" area i know of on the north side is satelite but i imagine it's ridiculously expensive. still, i would probably agree that it's better to live nearby and just commute to DF on weekends. you will save yourself so much time and stress, even if you have to live somewhere ugly.
why would any sane person commute from ecatepec to coyoacan? sounds like a recipe for misery. |

I do it for the same reason a lot of other people do it, out of necessity. I don't earn enough where I work to live decently in the city. And there aren't many good job opportunities in the north of the city either.
It is crazy however, so I am currently looking for other work to change the situation. Something where I can earn more so I can afford to live near wherever I'd be working. |

Anyone familiar with Naucalpan? Despite Freddy's warnings about long commute (Im a New Yorker, long commutes are in my blood), I HAVE TO GET THE HECK OUT OF TOLUCA! Im thinking maybe Naucalpan as close to Cuatro Caminos as possible
Really hard to find a place that isnt really expensive on the west side of DF |
