If I come to Japan and apply for jobs, do I have to have a different format resume or can I just bring the one I used in North America?

And if I need a Japanese format resume, can anyone provide samples?

Try reading the sticky at the top of the forum entitled " Writing a CV and cover letter for Japanese employers".

A regular resume will probably work, but you will be asked to provide the following information anyway, so I'd suggest putting it on your resume:

photo
visa status
marital status
nationality
date and place of birth

In addition, you should realize that paragraphs describing your job experience are unnecessary here. Keep it to bullets (short ones).

Minimize corporate buzzwords. Probably not known here.

Minimize how much you praise yourself. Humble is better here.

Don't use ANY abbreviations except for USA, UK, and major EFL certifications like CELTA.

A japanese format resume will probably be typed up in Japanese which is not what you want. A resume can be written in English in a similar style but i usually advise people to keep the resume free of trumpet-blowing and throwing everything but the kitchen sink at an employer. A CV is a work and education record and should be kept simple, especially for entry level jobs. You are being asked to teach English not do organic chemistry.

Resumes in the US (the ones I have read anyway) tend to be overblown and wordy, full of irrelevant detail, and dont assume that the person reading may not be a native speaker of English, and doesnt know what a GPA or an SAT is.

If you're talking about a rirekisho, yes.
If you're talking about an English resume suitable for Japanese reviewers, no. What I've described above fits this mold.

Sweetsee, I'm applying for university jobs that start in October, some are also for next April. The hiring season is whenever universities post ads and are accepting resumes. Applicants simply submit resumes before the set deadlines.
