Hi, I was thinking of spending a weekend in Madrid and wondered if anyone could recommend a nice old hostal - one of those ones with a cloister or interior patio with plants.

Cheers, Bob

Hey there,

Hmmm... I got this from Lonely Planet Online. Hope it helps!

Hostal Orly

Calle de la Montera 47

"Light-filled hostal with a bird's-eye view."

REVIEW In a grand old 19th-century building, Hostal Orly is excellent value. Although most of the character is reserved for the public spaces (a fine wooden ceiling in reception, archways in the corridors), the rooms are cheerful with tall ceilings and wooden floors.
Although some of the rooms face onto the internal patio of the building, those facing the street have fabulous views and are high enough above the clamour to avoid the worst of the noise. The furnishings are simple but spotless. One curious feature of this place is the friendly owner's propensity to point out what she sees as deficiencies in her hostal (cheap hotel), but we found none and have decided that her pessimism is wholly misplaced. What this attitude does mean is that she is constantly looking for ways to improve - fridges and air-con in every room are cases in point.

AUTHOR EXPERIENCE You learn a lot about a city by strolling down its major boulevards and the Gran Va is one of Madrid's busiest and most beautiful. Cut through the heart of the city early in the 20th century, its facades are a mix of old and new and its energy is irresistible. Gran Va tumbles down the hill to Plaza de Espaa, a lovely patch of greenery and a great place to sit back and enjoy the passing parade.

TRANSPORT DETAILS From Gran Va station, the building's entrance is just 50m away, on the west side in Calle de la Montera.

Later gator,

Bob, you can checkout the Cat's Hostel, very interesting place, it is a young crowd though.
