having printed out jim dunlop's extensive world cup schedule i thought we were in for a sky perfect treat during the world cup. but the other day a friend of mine called up skyperfect about soccer and was told sky perfect weren't showing any games live.
i thought he was joking but the girl on the phone was adamant, repeating many times games weren't live on channel 181.
so i went to the website and found this schedule. looks like every game is delayed.

your thoughts? and will there be free to air live games? |

Not 100% certain on this, but I reckon relying on NHK's channels might be a better bet. I think that between NHK General, BS1, and BS hi-vision they have all the games on live. As long as you have BS1, then together with NHK General you'll get all but 3 or 4 games they're only showing on hi-vision. And of those 3 or 4 only on hi-vision, one is a Japan game which will obvously be shown by another terrestrial broadcaster anyway. Perhaps the other non-Japan games might be on somewhere else too.
Once again, trying to sort out how you can watch the World Cup in Japan is quite a challenge. I dunno if the above is the definitive answer, and will happily stand corrected as I've only had a quickish scan through a few tv schedules.
Whatever, the bottom line seems to be DON'T go panic buying a skyperfect tv dish & antenna! |

Hmm... Well, I know the kanji for "LIVE" and I got my info from the Japanese broacast schedule sheet... But I wonder what データスタジオ means.... Does that mean that these stupid monkeys will be RECORDING the game at that time but not broadcasting it???
If that's the case, what the hell else will they be showing during all those 3-hour timeslot blocks they got highlighted in gold?
Now I'm throughly confused. |

The Kanji for "live broadcast" is 生放送 (nama housou) but sometimes they show games that are pre-recorded it may have this kanji 初回放送
which I think is "shokai housou". I don't know what "data studio" is but I think you are probably right that they will record it and deliberately not broadcast it until after the game has finished. To watch those games you may have to pay extra for extra channels. |

the guy on the phone said that skyperfect wouldn't be showing any games live. as i said my friend was also told this last thursday. by the english support people so they weren't just getting confused.
this has actually become an issue with fifa - in japan and oz too. i think other channels will show live games but not sure about 1 channel broadcasting all. and i'm not sure which channels will have it.
i don't have bs1 or bs2. is there any way i can get them? but sky most certainly won't be playing any live games - just all the games delayed about 12 hours to a day or so. which ain't too grand for real live excitement........ |

To get bs1 or bs2, you need a bs satellite, a subscription to them (I think)and a tv with bs capability.
I only have 1 of the 3, so I'm SOL like you. Very disappointing. |

No, gentlemen. BS is very, very easy to get. Lemme explain.
Step 1: Obtain a BS satellite dish. Best sources for this are: new at a denki shop (expensive), through Yahoo Auction (cheap but hard to figure out how to do) or a recycle shop (cheap and easy). I got mine from the latter, and the dish and tons of cable cost me under 3,000 yen.
Step 2: Obtain a BS decoder. There are two usual sources for this. EITHER: a BS-capable TV (it should say right on your TV or there should be a "BS" section when you go into the setup menus using your R/C) OR a BS-capable VCR. Again, this is my case. I have a SONY VCR and it says right on there: BS.
Step pre-3: Buy a cheap compass from an outdoor store or 100 yen shop.
Step 3a): Mount your BS dish on your balcony of your apartment or house. You need to do three things here. First, set the dish elevation to what it should be. If you bought your dish from a recycle shop, this may already be pre-set properly... If it is, great! But don't rely on that fact. Next, set the azimuth to the correct compass direction, using your 100-yen shop compass. The general direction and angle of the dish can be obtained from this website: http://www.satlex.de/en/home.html and varies slightly depending on where in Japan you live. Use the compass to set the general direction of the dish. But in general,
The BSAT 1A/2A N=Sat 110 (110.0 degrees E = 250 degrees W) satellite (NHK) is sitting at:
Azimuth angle: 223.07 degrees
Elevation angle: 38.79 degrees
LNB tilt (skew): 33.70 degrees
Finally, if it hasn't been already done so, set the skew on the LNB. Some dishes have a fixed LNB so there is nothing to set here.
Step 3b) Using coaxial cable (RG-6 type) (make sure you have enough) and connect one end to the satellite dish's LNBF and the other into the BS-input coaxial jack of your BS decoder/TV/VCR.
Step 4: Turn on your TV and/or BS decoder and find the "find satellite signal" option from the menu using your remote control. You should see a slider from 0 to 100. The default signal strength will likely be about 16 when there is no signal.
Step 5: With a friend on your balcony and you watching the signal strength on TV, fine tune the direction of your dish, back and forth (and up/down if you need to) until you have a good signal and can see a picture.
Step 6: Sit down, crack open a tall boy, enjoy your new TV channels: BS1 and BS2.
Step 7: Refer to other Dave's threads on how to get rid of the NHK man when he comes by and spots your new BS dish.
No one should be soccer-less. It's really easy guys, I did it myself in a matter of hours. Also, if you buy from a recycle shop, there's a good chance that the dish's asimuth is already pre-set from its last owner so all you need to do find the correct compass direction.
The NHK beam is wide and thus easy to find (unlike the Sky beam). It"s free-to-air so you don't need to subscribe to anything or do anything more than what I said above. If you have any questions or problems with these steps, PM me and I'll do my best to help.
Good luck!

What a bugger!
Think I will have to spend a month making sure I dont find out the results so I can enjoy the "live" action. 12 hours is a long time though.
Anybody know how much the world cup package is on sky btw? |

You need Skyperfect to get BS channels? I'm pretty sure we have them with our cable connection. J-COM for the win! |

By the way, where is this great World Cup schedule? I'm looking for something that will show all the games and what time they start at live. |

Not much help to you guys, but SBS, here in Oz, is showing every game on free to air, and the majority are live, including Oz vs Jpn on 12/06. It is going to be the first tough choice our 27 day old son is going to have to make; barrack for Japan with mum or 'root' for Australia with dad!!
Sorry to rub salt into your wounds; schedule a quick holiday to Oz......?! |

The following website will be streaming LIVE coverage of all world cup games.
www.asiaplate.com
When the group games start at the same time you'll be able to pick your choice.
I have just finished watching the F1 via the site.
As i have stated in previous posts, this site provides live coverage of most major sporting events regardless of sport.
The quality is usually first class. |
