I work at SEAMEO sometimes. While you see this around anywhere, they have the largest collection I've seen. You know the type. Constantly babbling on, and on, and on and on about how long they've been in Vietnam, about their "wife and kid," about their housemaid, about their ordeal of registering something down at the local precinct or district office and the unavoidable bureaucracy. Their lives are a dramatic bore, like a soap opera, yet it's strange at how 'fired up' they are about such mundane issues. So enthusiastic to talk about their daily challenges. Always mention their Vietnamese wife or spouse. Their lives are so completely obsessed by it all so much that they certainly don't realize they need to get a new life. Their entire being is completely devoted to being a super -- albeit completely normal -- diplomat in the living.
There's one guy I swear, I have never seen him nor heard him when he wasn't saying "my wife and..." and running on about some new family challenge.
Then there's the single guys that just want to prove what exceptional conformists they are, following every rule and seem to be in competition to be the role model expatriate. These things all wouldn't be nearly so bad if they didn't practically shout the stuff out. In any event these guys that seem so adamant about proving what exceptional foreigners they can be need to find a new path to enlightenment, don't you think? |
