"Di", why delete your words? Sometimes what is written during a late night Sunday drunken rant is worth saving. I find your late night writings very entertaining.

I didn't really like it when you wrote this though:

Qu ni-de mama

In Mandarin this means "F*** your Mother." Is that how a the Academic Director of the largest school in your city should write on a public forum?

You obviously don't like what I'm telling you. But it's the truth based on years of experience and observation. It's not meant to 'hurt' or insult. I wish you good luck. In fact, if I hear of any p/t teaching work I'll send you a PM. I heard there's going to be a set up where local plumbers who service the expat houses in Gubei are going to need some w.c. English vocab. training. You up for it? Send me your resume with a photo. Please wear a nice shirt and tie in the photo so I can show the students.

If you had more experience you'd see my advice as positive. I doubt you have ever taught in any other Asian countries besides China. You lack depth and can't see the whole picture. Just stop misleading others. That's all I ask. You can fool yourself all you want, but don't act like a misleading recruiter for others interested in teaching in China.

Could you two arrange a time to meet somewhere in Renmin Guang Chang to duke it out? This is very boring. Middie's been a thoughtful and constructive poster...........up until now. I think prof is pushing some buttons.

Nah, that's not my style. Besides Middy is much older than I am.

I know Middy. And, yes, he does have a lot to offer. Whether it be on teacher training in China, inter-cultural marriage, the 'age gap' in such a marriage, life in Pudong, Pudong vs. BC, teaching in Nanjing as a newbie, Wuhuan family life, the value of the Ken doll, even why China needs to make Chevy Blazers for the rough roads. Great English corner topics.

However, IMO he misleads people here either on purpose or simply because he has failed to explain where his point of view comes from. Because his way of viewing things comes from a very real framework regarding his age, qualifications, social life, ethics, flexibility on legal issues, and the like.

I'm simply telling him what I think and challenging him to defend his opinions and observations. For example, he wrote "I don't care about visa regulations." Well, I do. And I think others should as well!!

I enjoy going over these issues with him (except when he started the sad pinyin insults!) But from what I know about him, he'll likely run away from the debate rather than letting new teachers see two very different sides to teaching in China from two very different people with different qualifications, different demands on the system, and different knowledge levels of Shanghai.

As Middy wrote on the Cafe:

Maybe it's a strange combination of luck and temperament. I've lived 1 year in Nanjing, I year in a small village in An Hui, and 2 years in Shanghai. My employer in Nanjing was terrible, but Canadian. I was the only foreigner in Ningguo, and the only English speaker. For me, living in Shanghai is like living in the west.

When I was young, I was a long-haired freak, so I had lots of time to get used to stares and insults. I know the difference between hate and curiosity, and react accordingly. I don't get upset over minor things. My poor Chinese skills help me to disregard negative comments. I know how to dialogue without arguing. I really like people, and at the same time, my heart goes out to them. I was raised in a very poor, mixed-race neighbourhood, so poverty and lack of education is not a novelty. I've worked in the service industry and transportation, so I've been exposed to a lot of different types of people. I have low expectations in every area, so I don't get disappointed easily. And, maybe most importantly, I look for the best in every person and every situation I encounter. I am stubbornly patient. I express my needs without complaining. I have no religious values, a twisted sense of humour, and my political values are situational, not partisan.

Very good read. There is no one "right or wrong" way of seeing all things, but a little background information goes a long way. He can take his BA, teach whomever will hire him, work p/t legally or illegally and whatever. I pity him rather than oppose him!
