I am thinking of maybe taking a CELTA course soon, but it seems like a lot of hard earned money and dedicated time, with maybe little payoff. I see many posts here stating the low job availabilities and the pays are so low, I do not quite see the point. Of course, I want to learn for my own self growth, but I need to make a living as well. I was really thinking about getting a CELTA and teaching maybe in Paris, France, but the pay and info's I have read here seems quite depressing. Any input to persuade me in a more positive direction would be greatly appreciated, but if this is reality then tell me so. |

Yes, the Celta is a lot of money and for much of the world, it may not be very cost effective. But... it is a good program, it is the most recognized tefl cert (ie, it will get you a job) and you will learn a lot.
How long do you plan on teaching?
France and much of Western Europe is not a great place to work, wages are low and you should ahve an EU passport.
East Asia pays the best for people with little or no qualications, like yourself.
Do you have a degree? Many of the more decent jobs require one as do many countries. |

Hi Gordon,
Nice points and nice website. I plan to do a CELTA this summer to add a bit more "under my belt".. I guess after I could maybe get my money back.
Seems very popular these days and demand is getting less and more teachers entering the market.
Why do I always get attracted to jobs that are like these : challenging but oays very little..

Thanks. Like most careers, you have to start at the bottom and work your way up. If not, the top wouldn't be worth attaining. You can make a decent career out of TEFL, but unfortunately most of the more interesting countries don't pay very well. Like you, I'd love to teach in France or Italy, but I think I'll just go there for holidays. |

Japan and Asia seems interesting, but I heard it is expensive too.
Seems quite a nice demand.
Any job offers that are worth seeking?
Thanks |
