spank me, i'm a newbie. poised, like a great explorer,on the korean penninsula and aiming to make landfall in exotic china. am i a dork, or what? but seriously, my boss here in korea is a complete jerk, and that prods me to have a look over yonder but where? don't want to be out in the country/'in the middle of nowhere', nor breathe in crap air. what's a newbie sort of easy starting place? a medium to large size city, like. not too far from the money. yeah, i dunno, what you looking at? my wallet? (taught kids 8-13 mostly seven yr.kor/one yr.taiwan). six month contract, no more. there better be some answers here or i'll, i'll...spank you when i see you |

Well, we're very sorry but those are your only two choices if you decide to come to China. |

Kirk,
How about boldly going where no man has gone before? Maybe that would have to be another planet. Hmmmm, dare I say you might explore Uranus? Watch out for those Kling-ons! They love to circle Uranus this time of year!
Seriously though, I like Guanzhou the best. Try it out.

I saw a job offer for Baghdad recently. Promises to offer a high 'relocation' bonus. |

confucious say, "besides shutting the hell up, only laughter isn't a waste of breath". and, "the only true thing is an open hand, all the rest is bullsh*t". haha, what a feast. thanks for the spanking. in korea, pohang is a great place to work. nice city, you'll like it. you'll lose most of your hair and have gushy sores to scratch, with a fine view of the sea. |

ah, Pohang...a seaside resort specialising in heavy industrial attractions, i.e. a huge steelworks spewing god knows what into the air and water, right? I had forgotten how much China and Korea have in common. |

Kirk, if I only go for a week of vacation, can I still get the sores? Sounds like a good vacation. |

if you ever surf the korea job discussion board here on dave's pohang is the infamous butt end of korea. there's a guy out there, 'whathefunk', who seems to love it, though. it is periodically over-run by marines on off-time, and has a brothel district with very inexpensive 60 year old pros. he lives out by there, and the only time, it seems to him, his friends come out to visit him is to tour the shops to shake the monotony. he falls all over place like a jester making the best of it using alcohol and a deranged sense of perspective(i am not here, this is not me,i am drunkee). good he has a sense of humor about it. what else is there? apparently, the japanese have a saying they find hysterically funny; 'this is my life!'. |

It seems to me from reading this forum that Shanghai has the best reputation for being an okay start for foreigners. I had Kunming recommended to me recently. Weather not too hot in summer (elevation), no winter to speak of, big city but not polluted to the point of . . . well what you can find in other places, international food restaurants, borders southeast Asia (Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Mymar, Thailand all close.)
A lot of people seem to like Dalian (and I was scheduled to go there.) I've heard a few stories about bad employers, though.
I have a friend who lives in Fuzhou and loves it. In Fujian province next to Taiwan.
The following are only honourable mentions!
Then there's always Hong Kong . . . . (before you Hong Kong bash, please go into rural Jiangxi province for 18 months straight. Hong Kong will be a bloody paradise after that.) I have no idea how easy/hard it would be to get on there . . . .
Oh, and Beijing, which seems to be a wonderful and terrible place at the same time. Not my first choice, if only to avoid Olypicitis. That being said, there's always Tianjin - which I know nothing about I admit. |

I've been in Dalian for a year now, and have just started a second contract. Its a good city to live in, it probably meets your criteria. As Wolf notes though, the private schools pay tolerably well but dish out crap. The institutes pay chicken feed but are good to work for. Sounds familiar, no?
The consensus among the other teachers that I've discussed this with has been Kunming, Dalian and then Qingtao. But that's just word of mouth, and most of those mouths were full of beer. |

DON"T go go Tianjin (near Beijing). I've been there once, and it looks awful. Please correct me if I stray from the truth, Tianjinites! |
