Hello,

I've been looking for work in Shanghai, and have noticed that a lot of job ads ask for you to send a picture of the first page of your passport.

So far I haven't commplied with that request, but every job I've applied to asks for it as soon as they get my resume. I guess I just want to know if I should be e-mailing people a picture of my passport.

Any information would be welcome. Thanks for your help.

P.S. Can anyone recommend a good school / company to work for in Shanghai? Thanks.

4 reasons for sending a copy of your passport...

1. many people who have migrated to a western speaking country my not be native speakers. Your passport is proof of your Nationality.

2. They need to see the expiry date on your passport so they can issue the appropriate documents for you to get a working visa in china.

3. They also need to show the chinese foreign affairs beureau so that they can actually get the documents you need for your work visa application before you come.

4. they get to see your face

There is no real worry about it. They cant forge a passport from a photocopy. It is just Chinese Gov regulations. If you are really worried about it then scan your passport and reduce the size so it is only 1/2 the size of a regular passport.

For language centers:

The prettier you are, the more bums in the seats.

EFL is a business.

For high schools, teacher training colleges, middle schools, primary schools it's to see your skin color, as the students are less demanding as long as you look "Western" and show up on time.

The pic is sooooo important. It lets them know that you are not too old or the wrong color.

This is a business and young is good, so is white.

You are the star attraction, the white monkey. That's what people will pay to see.

OP, that request has puzzled me before, although I have complied with it.
Now, I hope that my passport has not been "duplicated" too many times in China and some "Chen Tao" doesn't travel or immigrates on it as we speak here. I know, I know it's quite unlikely, but there are soooo many things that have happened and surprised this world ... Confused
As the new Chinese law has kicked in and foreigners need to get their "Z" work visa to enter China for their employement purposes there should not be a need/request for a passport copy anymore. I also think it purely is an "excuse" to see how good-looking we are, how young we are or what color of skin we are. Wink

Cheers and beers Smile

Maggie would be stuck making 4000 /month in some middle school in Anhui where you have to go to the pump to get your water before 9pm each night.

Chinese aren't as stupid as many Englishmen.

Despite the new rules, the school still needs the passport copy in order to get the necessary paperwork from the provincial Education Ministry, the provincial Foreign Affairs Bureau, and the local PSB to obtain the original Z work visa outside China. So that hasn't changed.

(Actually, there was a slight change - in addition to the Letter of Invitation to the person applying, the Employer's Labor Permit, and the Employer's Authorization to Hire a Foreigner, there is a new letter of some sort required to be obtained from the Foreign Expert's Bureau by the school. I briefly saw one for one of the new FTs my school was hiring but only got a cursory glance. I think this is the step where credentials - at least a Bachelor degree, work experience and TEFL cert. are being checked.)

My point is that the passport info is still needed to process the Z visa application documents. Yeah, they probably also want to check out what you look like, but they also need to get your full name and birthdate absolutely right because the documents must match the paperwork when you take it to the Chinese embassy for the Z visa. (In the case of my very first Z visa, they had transposed the birthdate month and year on the application - eg. July 5, 19XX (passport) became XX-05-07 and the school had re-do the documents, and re-send them to me to be re-submitted to the Embassy.

The real point is to see the race, age and beauty of the applicant.

Thanks for all the information! I've been e-mailing people all over the place trying to find an answer to my question and had no luck.

I really appreciate finally getting an answer.

Cheers,

Now Ymmv, thanx for your response on my allegations. In addition to your explanation, its worth to say that schools/centers must have appropriate licensing in order to be able to hire foreigners in China, but then thats not why our pretty pics are needed in my opinion. Now, I am still gona second-guess you on your explanation, because the Z work visa" we are talking about is arranged outside China and in the country of the schools/centers future foreign employee ABROAD, isnt it? If the future foreign employees documentation is not in order (outside China), he/she will not be given that Z in his/her passport. However, if the letter of invitation that you are talking about is to be certified or authorized or something by the Chinese government in China prior to its sending to the future foreign employee and prior to his/her Z work visa issuance abroad, I will have to agree with you then.

Cheers and beers Very Happy

Actually, sometimes I've had to add a picture with my application letter in my home country (Holland) as well. I've never thought much of it, but I would imagine that ethnic minorities beg to differ.

Anyway, we should be happy they don't need a medical from us. My girlfriend (Chinese btw) had to complete a full medical test before getting a job at a travel agency.

i had to add that comment on margaret thatcher....... because when i took my first job in china (in nanning), the man who hired me, introduced me to another teacher who he was thinking of hiring. when the three of us chatted, along with another FT, our chinese friend complimented the other FT applicant (a lady in her mid 50s) how beautiful she was and how much she resembled margaret thatcher. she was subsequently hired.

If you are great looking you are the "catch" of every language center in China.

But you can make a lot more money by marrying a rich Shanghainese woman.

Who needs the language center?!

Then you can write books and spend all your time on davescafe.com. Cool
