Just curious as to car insurance rates in Dubai. If you own a car in Dubai, or know someone who does, I'd be grateful if you could write the type of car and amount of insurance you pay per month (or year).

Thanks

I'll let someone who is currently there give current rates, but one essential to get low rates is to have a letter from an insurance company stating that you have had no claims for the prior 3-5 years. It will cut your premium in half.

The rates are similar in all Emirates. The rule of thumb is 4% of the value of the car for full coverage. Unless you have a long history (clean) with a company, cars older than 5 years will not be insured fully. Older vehicles can be insured for third-party coverage starting at 700 Dirhams (including Oman). If you are a new customer, you may pay more than a 1000 Dirhams for basic coverage. Bring a no-claims-certificate before coming here if you are eligible for one Wink.

4% for 4 door, 8% for 2 door sports cars, and some SUVs. that's for full coverage, which you must have if you have a car loan.

After a certain number of years you can't get full coverage. My nine year old Japanese economy car cost me 700. dihrams a year for 3rd party only coverage. If you want factory repairs you pay extra, and most companies won't provide it after the car is 3 years old.

In relation to the western world, insurance is cheap.

My car is 7 years old, and as grand fromage mentioned, I can only get 3rd party after 5 years. I paid 350 dhs last month.

I've also heard from some friends who have had accidents that the full insurance with factory repairs often only allows you to get factory parts, then they fix it in an outside repair shop anyway, so that's something to think about too. I'm not sure if this only involves some insurance companies, but worth looking into so you don't have to pay that extra fee if it's not what it seems.

In order to maintain your sanity and safety while driving in Dubai or any other major city in the UAE, you don't need a car - you need a Sherman tank!

We have plenty of drunk Emiratis too. In fact during Ramadan last year, the first since the death of big Z, and the first year that hotels in Abu Dhabi served alcohol during Ramadan, the police picked up 75-90 drunk Emiratis driving EVERY NIGHT.

This came from one of my American educated students who works with the traffic police.
