You shouldn't listen to the Glenskis and Paul Hs of the world. They are one of a kind. They have accomplished limited things but try to show how difficult the world of teaching in Japan really is.

Ho hum. This sort of post comes up once or twice a year.

Listen to it or not. Between Paul and me, we have almost 30 years of experience working as teachers in Japan, from eikaiwa, to private lessons, to high school, to university. Is that limited? You decide.

Have we done it all and seen everything? No, of course not. Nobody has (even X-MAN). But we've seen more than most and openly offer advice that in intended mostly for people to see the realities here, instead of following rosy-colored tips from many others, or instead of following such suggestions as "take the visa and run" or "screw the employers". Such bold statements may work for a few rare individuals, but they are poor advice for the fresh-faced newbies.

Blowhards, indeed.
False information? Prove it.

I will add that aside from the financial considerations of employers not wanting to spend a large amount of money on salaries, the reason you have many of these harsh working conditions and petty work rules such as anti-fraternisation is you have many self-centered, selfish immature people who come here, three months later chuck in their jobs once they get a visa and do a runner with no notice or want to take long vacations. Some will try to date students in their classes and a few even get caught with illegal drugs. Many new employees here have shown they simply cant be trusted with a responsible job.

The reason that teachers here are treated like 12 year olds is you get newbies that act like they are on spring break, treat their work like a hobby and dont think about the consequences of their actions upon those who follow them. Its advice such as the above that gives teaching in Japan a bad name and people like X-Man who advocate such behavior.

I can advocate anything I want. Fact is I have a great situation and advise others to follow suit. I don't send my family away and stay behind because it's the only way for me to make a living... It's sad but verytrue. What's even more sad is the hours that some people log on these forums! Was it Capper that mentioned that? He was dead on. I couldn't agree with him more. I think what happened was the administrators had difficulty dealing with his honesty and they locked him out of the site.

Why do you care?

Sure, and suffer whatever consequences that result from people who hav a different view. What you have recently advocated won't work for everyone, and it is (in my opinion and others) a poor route to take. If you can't take criticism, don't post.

What's with the personal attacks on one of the members here? That is the sort of attitude that gets people banned, not honesty.

Possibly capper, and a dozen others. Again, why do they even care? Most of the people who seem to complain about the time that others spend in these forums are people who have lives, too, and often they are very busy lives. So, why do they "waste so much time" coming here, I would ask?

400, 000 before tax isn't that hard, but you'd have to work three or four jobs, seven days a week, unless you really network and get the highly paid private jobs that some people seem to have.

Paul, is it true about what capper posted a couple of months ago that you actually live apart from your own family due to economic / relationship problems? And I don't mean in Japan. Is it true your family lives in another country? I find that rather disappointing when I hear stories like that. I mean people come on these forums all the time and talk talk talk about work and money -- just like this thread. My point is that these forums seem so important to people like you and Glenski. Yet, you basically are disowned by your own family???? I don't get it. Someone has there priorities up the wrong smelly place! Are you kidding me??? The issue here is money and jobs -- why are you getting involved? You should be worried about the ultimate priority. Glenski too. Agree all?
