Ok so far ive been getting mostly ( tell a lie, all) negative vibes about Turkey, well more Istanbul. So what are the positives ? surely there must be some good things here. I'll start, the weather is great, I come from London so nothing could really be worse, the food is better than London's, the view over the bridges (whilst stuck in traffic) of the Marmara is great, I also enjoy ferrying from the Eastern side to the western side again it's the view which i enjoy. Can u guys add more positives?

oo yes the people watchnig, dodging the beggers ,telling an irrate policeman you have no idea what he is saying . getting away with speeding fines . open 24/7 ,the sun set and moon rise over the river in october awasome. the dolphines hopping up and down the river .the sultry looks on the young babes . a warm smile from a miggros cashier.

I love the cloudless blue skies, all the yummy cooked egg plant stuff, cheap beers, light brown skinned folks(wish I was-wouldn't need to tan!), errrr...ahhhh...having trouble finding more. I realllllly need a holiday....

I was in Istanbul for the first time in dogs' ages last Monday. It felt good to be back and everything seemed so easy compared to here in the small town. I drank some beers outside a small bar in Taksim after going to Topkapı Palace for the tourist thing. I figure, for foreigners Istanbul is, hands down, the best place in Turkey to live in. I want to move back there.

Istanbul is a state of mind, it's not one thing or group of things. There's nothing you can point at and say 'thats what makes this city great'.

On every level you have to feel as if this city stinks, there's way to many people, traffic is insane, rent levels are mad, you can't go for a jog, some of the locals look at you as if you have come down from Mars, some of the locals have personal look and 'smell' that makes your eyes soar, the cops are always ready to help with smack on your head, after match bullets rain around you as you duck for cover, the heat and dust of summer and cold mud of winter......... Confused Sad Crying or Very sad ..... and these are only some of the reasons you should get out and level before its to late... Confused

You see for some of us, it is too late.... For some reason that none of us could hope to explaine we have fallen head over heals in love with this place...

Like all great cites Istanbul is a state of mind, dont ask us whats positives.
If you have the time and the energy, give it a try, don't stay too long you will find that it will get more and more difficult to leavel the city as each year rolls by.

For me the idea of living in a city that is between east and west is fun and despite everything and everyone (Turks included) the city has some how managed to stay alive and change with time...

Like I said you don't talk about Istanbul, it makes no sence, you live Istanbul...........Happy 550th year................ Istanbul...... Wink Exclamation

BLLLLAAAGGGHHH!!!! SKOL!!!

Do you guys drink 40s of malt up there? I've forgotten the names but they come in clear glass bottles. Or maybe Skol is malt, I don't know.

Ever tasted Night Train? I'm not even sure what it is, but we sure blinded ourselves on it a lot in high school....Foul and wretched. But cheap!

OK, Night Train was a "fortified wine," and no, not much of a fan.

Canada beer: good; Canadian VAT and other taxes: Bad.
In any case I'd rather pay 6YTL for a cold Molson Export then 3 YTL for an Efes.

In the 3 years I've been here I'vewatched the beer prices rise nearly daily. AK parti raising alch taxes of course, plus inflation....

Gosh, I remember when you could get a 4 pack of Efes in Migros for 3 million, just a few years ago. I miss that.

...and getting a nice (non Dikmen) bottle of wine in a decent place for 10 million or less.

Alas!
