Hi everyone
I'm a total newbie to the forum, been lurking a while. Now it's time to jump in the deep end and ask my first question. I would like to do the CELTA course this year and it's been suggested that I should do the course at a institute in the Middle East so I can also practice Arabic, which I've been learning for a year or so. I've been onto the Cambridge site which lists a number of places offering CELTA in the ME but the names mean nothing to me and to a newbie they all sound good. I'd love to hear from anyone with recommendations or warnings about courses on offer in the Middle East or anything else I should take into consideration.

Thanks.

There are a couple of places in Cairo that offer CELTA certificate courses - among them the London based International House. There's a place in Alexandria that offers a different but analagous certificate (I don't remember the details).

Cairo is warm and friendly - and cheap.

The good old British Council in most locations offer CELTA and DELTA courses on a part- or full-time basis, if you are based in a capital city.

I'm a bit biased, but I do love Cairo. It is very cheap to live there and there's so much to see (not that you'll have lots of free time during the actual course-if you're planning on visiting some sites, build in time before and after the course start and end). Egyptian Arabic, though nothing like the formal kind, is most widely understood because of the Egyptian film industry. Well, perhaps you'll be most widely understood, though understanding others might be more of a challenge! Wink

I noticed Oman, Morocco, Tunisia, and Yemen also had institutes that offered the cert (among others)...all of them quite unique experiences! I think Morocco and Tunisia would be low-cost (airfare to the country in particular) and culturally rich experiences along with Cairo. Just my two cents...

According to the Cambridge wedsite http://cambridgeesol-centres.org none of the countries I suggested actually have the CELTA offered. Hmm...this doesn't sound right, since I know of a place in Cairo that offers the cert (ILI-International House-though perhaps not year-round). Perhaps the above-mentioned site is not current? No CELTA course in Tunisia? Morocco? Ok, Yemen seemed like a bit of a stretch...but not in Egypt??

There have been a few people looking into taking the course in Cairo and have not been able to find any place. ILI had apparently stopped. Perhaps they lost their CELTA examiner?
