Hello, I wasn't suggesting that you need a degree in education or TESOL, and the EFL world is very new to me still. I was just stating that I have recently done a CELTA and found it to be a brilliant basis for learning to teach. I can't imagine how difficult it would be to really teach a class well without having had that training on planning and teaching.
Celta, delta, Trinity, Degrees, Masters and so on are more than just pieces of paper. They are proof that you have studdied the subject and learnt a sufficient amount to earn that certificate. |

Another thing you are going to learn Fishy is that there is not a lot of call for advanced TEFL qualifications. Look at the job board and work out how many 4 weeker jobs there are compared with those asking for and paying for jobs with MAs and Dips. |

It's been my observation that level of education has very little to do with actual teaching ability. I've met people with masters degrees in related fields who can't teach worth a damn, and yet I've met high-school drop-outs who can. |

Fair enough, but all of the better paid jobs I'm looking at ask for at least a 4 week TEFL and a degree. I'm sure each country will have different requirements though.
I just want to be as well qualified as possible. I think how much and how well the students learn is surely more important than what I need to do to get a job... |

Better paying jobs are few and far between. |

There is nothing wrong with getting yourself well qualified and looking for the best jobs - and opening as many options as possible. In fact, it is the only smart thing to do!
As noted above - of course - there are many more entry level jobs. Just as there loads of entry level jobs and lots of TEFL Newbies . . . there are not so many of us with graduate degrees - so the good jobs vs quallifications thing is in good balance IMO/IME. |
