Very exciting game and a deserving finish. Australia was the better team and Japan really choked eh? They must have been watching their Olympic counterparts on tape before the game. Nakata was right about his teammates. |

That the team wasn't ready and couldn't finish their chances. I think he was trying to light a fire under them, but it didn't work.
What are the Japanese reactions today about the game? |

Indeed. I thoroughly agree! Japan's goal against Australia WAS definitely a foul -- and I don't know what the heck game the refs were watching, but it sure wasn't the same one the rest of us were...
Chalk it up to luck, but it should've been disallowed. Technically speaking, the final score should have been 3-0.
BTW, to be fair (and despite my bias) it IS too bad that the U.S. shot (against CZ) hit the goalpost... Would've been good had they scored. Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing CZ and US in the top two of their group and it would be a shame if the U.S. were eliminated based on goal differential -- (an often overlooked statistic). |

You're too kind Jim. The US are no better at soccer than they are hockey. Would have been 4-0 if they were playing hockey against the Czechs. |

What do you expect? They spent their entire pre-World Cup preparation playing against high school teams. Kind the same as how their mogul ski team practices by doing flips into a swimming pool. Completely ridiculous practics methods.
Anyways here's the breakdown of the game. Australia actually had more ball control during the game-I'm kind of surprised about that stat.
Shots (on Goal)...........22(11)....9(3)
Fouls..........................23..........11
Corner Kicks...............5...........3
Offsides......................4...........3
Time of Possession......55%......45%
Yellow Cards...............4...........3
Red Cards...................0..........0
Saves.........................6.........10 |

3 goals in 7 minutes...a joy to watch.
I think the old intestinal fortitude factor came into play.
Japan seemed to run up the white flag in the last few minutes
(not very "samurai" of them).
Oh, if only time could stand still. Australia vs Brazil is going
to be a very different kettle of fish.
But, if Australia can beat Croatia, they could make it through
to the round of 16. |

Seems like its been a while so I thought I would ge the ball rolling again.
Italy and Ghana both impressed me. It was a good game with some fast paced soccer.
I didnt really want Korea to win but they impressed. It really shows how important it is to have a guy who is willing to step up and take a shot on goal ( and actually hit it ) Togo played well and still managed to show the occasional attacking run a man down. Moreover I thought both teams showed a good attitude and good sportsmanship, realizing professional fouls and not over reacting too much. They helped each other up with smiles on their faces and it made for a nice atmosphere, good on both teams. |

not sure how many of you are football fans or casual observers, but japan's goal was nothing but a foul for the simple fact that the japanese player made no attempt to go for the ball. regardless of whether the aussie keeper's positioning was good or bad, the fact that he was hit by a player not contesting the ball in any way automatically deems it a foul.
the net is full of players, current refs, ex refs and pundits calling it a foul, notwithstanding the aussie keeper's poor postitional play.
and as another poster said, australia outshot japan 3:1. 23 shots at goal for the aussies compared with 8 for japan. aside from the goal, japan never looked like scoring, though they had ample chances. you simply can't miss the target so often from such close range......
and i quite rightly agree with the views on the japanese keeper. some great saves of shots, but at this level saves you'd expect him to make. the real worth of a keepr is how commanding he is in and around the 18 yard box. the first time he came off his line he flapped at the ball, missed it completely, and left the goal empty. sadly, but quite rightly, he will be judged on that, because a keeper is there to keep goals out.
3-1 is a little harsh on japan, but overall, australia were clearly the better side. it's easy to say after 3 goals in 10 minutes but finishing wins matches at any level. and of course the more times you attempt the more chances you have to finish well. |
Excellent post by someone who seems to actually know the game. Spot on about the foul on the keeper and the reason why. You could say Schwarzer's judgment should have been better but that's not the point. At the end of the day it didn't matter. Personally, I thought 3-1 was about a fair reflection of the game. Japan had a decent amount of possession, but Schwarzer didn't really have a lot to do, with Kawaguchi being much, much busier.
The NHK commentary people are clueless. They kept saying 'fine save Kawaguchi' when he was just parrying shots other keepers would have perhaps caught. Most of the ones they were praising him for were shots from distance close to his body. And as 'might be going' said, he was criminally at fault for the equaliser, to say nothing of the endless number of crosses he flaps hopelessly at. He does have his good points, but I think Narazaki is a much better keeper.
Incidentally, on the Korea - Togo game, I got a couple of texts from friends in the stadium saying that with the roof closed the heat was unbearable with no ventilation. I noticed a German weather dept official warning that "the heat would be a killer if the roof is closed", which may explain the lethargic 1st half, particularly from the Koreans. I was quite impressed with Togo, who gave it a good shot, but Korea did enough in the 2nd half to just about deserve it. |

Schwarzer and Vidooks have now come out and said that the ref apologised to them after the Japanese goal and admitting he got it wrong.
Today's result (brazil 1 - Croatia 0) makes it all the harder for Oz (top of the group though ), and Japan. The Croats will see Oz and Japan as being beatable. Hopefully we've got enough Croats in OUR team to beat the Croatia team! |

Yeah they sure wiped the floor with Ukraine. I don't know about that red card call though. The guy fell after he took the shot. |

I only ever saw him down Chapel Street Pr'an
Anyhow Spain did look pretty slick I mean of the Old Guard teams they have looked like they were going for the jugluar not just doing enough to get a result.
The French have fizzled again, hard to believe they have not scored a goal in World Cup competition since they won the bloody thing. |
