I would like to move to Vietnam in early 2007 to start a career as an ESL teacher. I have read that the job market is getting smaller and more competitive, but other people (on other forums) have urged me to just head over because theres plenty of work Im confused!! Im guessing that it all depends on what you have to offer, so here is my situation:
- I am a 26 year old Australian woman
- I was due to have finished my BA (majoring in English Lit) in November, but due to illness this semester I will have 1 subject to complete, which I will do online while in HCMC.
- I will do my CELTA either before I leave Oz or in Vietnam (any advice about the pros and cons about doing it in Vietnam are appreciated).
- I have some informal experience helping exchange students with their English at uni.
- I get on well with children and teenagers and can keep them entertained etc, but I also know how to keep them in line.
- I have a squeaky clean police record.
- I am looking at this as a career, not as a way to fund my travels (though the travel is a great perk!).
- I will have enough money to live on for about 2 months without work.
- I am not expecting a glamorous lifestyle. A decent apartment/house (share) and a few luxuries (and delicious local food) is all I need.
So what do you think? On-paper do I look like I have a chance? Off-paper I interview well, have a solid work history in administration, dont look like Barbie but I am Caucasian and I make (and keep) friends easily!
Thanks for taking the time to read this lengthy post!
