I will be leaving to teach english somewhere in Taiwan mid-October.
I have friends who teach outside Taipei but my desire is to teach elsewhere, likely Taichung. My agenda is wide open as to where I will put down some roots but i don't want to tour the country too much before settling on a city to live.
It seems most opportunities discussed fall on the western side of island (Taichung,Kaoshiung,Tainan, etc). This would also seem to me from reading the postings to be the side of the island that is more highly polluted (again, this is only gathered from what I have read).
Are there Taiwanese cities on the eastern side of island that provide employment opportunities and perhaps a 'cleaner' way of life....or is air pollution a way of life all over the island.
Thanks. |

Hualien is the city you are looking for. Small, beautiful and friendly people. Located right in the heart of some of the most beautiful scenery in East Asia.
The down side is that outside of the fledgling tourist industry there is not much work. It is an economically depressed area. Add to that the fact that the scenery and environment attract many foreign teachers and you have more teachers than work. If you don't mind not making a lot of money, Hualien is the place for you. |

Even though the cities you mentioned are densely populated and polluted it is really not that difficult to escape the city and get to some peaceful and beautiful places. Often these lie a surprisingly short distance from the city. |
