I already stated this question in the general discussion group, but maybe I could get a more specific answer here.
I'm looking into the possibility of working in Japan, however, I have a marijuana conviction from several years ago in Canada. I have worked in Korea, even though that country has strict drug law policies.

The official policy for most countries is that they won't let one obtain a work visa if one has a criminal record, especially a drug record. However, Korea does not check into ones background, so I'm just wondering if Japan does.

Basically, is it possible to obtain a work visa in Japan with a record?

I'm led to believe that it is a routine part of Japan's visa application process that they ask your local police station for any details of previous convictions. This is partly why they ask for your home town. Whether your country's police give out such information depends on your country.
