Hey, just wondering who's working in Tokyo at the moment or will be soon. I will be working near Tokyo starting September and for some reason, it would be comforting to know if there are any working souls in Tokyo or Yokohama from this forum Is it really as expensive as I heard it was?? (People say London's expensive but I was there for a semester studying abroad and I didn't find it to be as bad as I heard. Maybe it's best if I assume the worst?)

Hi Lady.
I'm in Tokyo and love it. Rent can be quite expensive depending on where you live. Will your rent be subsidized? Clothes and shoes can also be expensive, if you want good quality. Bring plenty. Otherwise, it's not bad. Eating out can be done cheaply and there are thousands of restaurants to choose from.
I'd say don't worry. Tokyo is great. |

If you used to London prices then I don't think you'll be shocked by anything here. It is easy to blow a lot of money going out in Tokyo all the time but if you're good with money you should be fine.
I live in the tokyo area and i manage to save a bit of money every month. Then again, one person I work with runs out of money before next paycheck comes every month.
Good luck! |

Hiya, thanks for the tips. yup my rent will be subsidized so it should end up costing around 500-550 (with utilities). It's not too bad, considering Tokyo ^^; Would I be able to save money if I cooked at home? I hope I'll be able to survive! |

Thanks for the tips ^^ Actually, I'm still not used to the London prices and I'm going back to the UK for 6 weeks this summer. Lol. Btw, is Tokyo safe? I know one should always take precautions and use common knowledge in big cities but my mom always tells me horror stories (to scare me) about how some foreigner or Taiwanese person was murdered while out making a phone call or something like that I'll be working till 9:30 PM. Are there a lot of people out that late? |

For women Tokyo is one of the safest cities in the world to walk around in. Women are often out till 1 or 2 in the morning. This is not New York.
For a look at prices in Tokyo go

Actually Paul, based on population size verses amount of crime, NYC is one of the safest cities in America. Still Tokyo is unbelievably safe compared to nearly every western city. |

Tokyo is quite large. Do you know in what area you'll be living? |

I'll be living in Kanagawa (probably Yokohama). Is that a good area to be in? |

Yokohma is smaller, but close enough to be a neighboring city, though it does depend on which part of Yokohama you'll be living in. You can certainly save money here, just watch the amount of times you go out (though socializing is often the way to find some of the best jobs).
As to safety, it's relatively safe, though I wouldn't recommend going to Kabuki-cho in the Shinjuku area late at night alone. |

Yeah, pretty much what everyone else has said. Safety is relative. There are nutjobs anywhere you go (did anyone read the one in Yomiuri yesterday, about the perv who walked around with nails protruding from his shoes, kicking women in the shins because he wanted to "hurt a pretty lady?")
As far as clothes go, I have just one word for ya: Uniqlo.
Otherwise, if you've lived in London, you already have a pretty good idea of what to expect in the way of prices, safety considerations and distance from point A to B... |

Hey! I am just looking for a job in that area right now. I want to start in September. Did you go through an organization/agency? I want to secure a job before I leave.
I am so excited about going, but only worry about not meeting others while I'm there (being a young female) and of course worry about safety. Anyways, it would be great to know someone else who is heading out there as well! And if you have any job hunting tips I would love to hear them. |

Have you read the stickies at the top of this forum? Thats a great place to start.
You can not fail to meet people if you get a job here as not only is Japan overcrowded but you will meet many foreigners at work in the same boat you are. |

Thanks! I think the hardest part is trying to decide what area of Japan I would like to live and work in. I know you can't be to picky because it all depends on what is available, but I do need to narrow it down.
I actually have to write the LSAT (law school admission test) in Tokyo while I am there, so I would like to be either in Tokyo or fairly close so the travel isn't a big deal.
I will defenatly check out the sticky's. Thanks again. |
