On a separate issue, I think the US still have an uphill task against Ghana, especially after such an exhausting game v Italy. But they're still in with a shout. |
That's something we can definitely agree on. |

I think Australia really showed some class last night.
We proved we are not just there to make up the numbers and really made Brazil work for everything.
Croatia here we come, we are really in with a shout to make the 2nd round now!
As an aside, is anyone else collecting those World Cup keychains that come with the bottles of coke and Aquarius? I have about 11 of them as of now. |

And so it has come to it. Japan have to beat Brazil by at least two goals in order to have a chance at qualifying. Now, we all know that that is practically going to be impossible, but isn't it just the stuff dreams are made of? The ultimate glory? Got to take out the World Champions to progress. You know the Japanese will have a good crack, so I might even set the alarm for that one.
Japan's dream is alive for another few days yet. |

Each to their own, of course, but some perhaps are easily bored when teams playing are either not their own, or not from a country they know much about.
The games tonight might turn out to be poor ones, but group H last week had a couple of cracking games, with 4 goals in each, some really excellent goals at that, a sending-off, an injury-time equaliser - top fun.
The most yawn-inducing games so far for me were the 2 involving my own country's team, England. |

Agreed.....
I would have to include Brazil amongst the most boring teams to watch so far.
The smaller teams tend to be the most exciting teams to watch....eg. Ivory Coast |

I was surprised how slow the Australia-Brazil game went... I can't say I was impressed much by Brazil's performance. As a team, they seemed precise and disciplined. They carried out their offside traps in an almost clinical fashion... But it was a rather boring game because they didn't put in much effort -- only running and putting in an effort when absolutely necessary. If it weren't for a couple of star strikers that have gotten lots of press time, as a whole, Brazil seems to be a very beatable team.
Australia, on the other hand, put in an excellent effort, and were enjoyable to watch play. They had a very legitimate shot at beating Brazil, and they well could have if they hadn't blown the fantastic chances they had at scoring -- and there were certainly a few. Australia obviously has a few things to learn yet, but they have the potential to be a very dangerous team.
As for tonight's games.... At the time of writing, the score is Switzerland 1 Togo 0. So my prediction is already a bit biased. But I'm going to guess a final score of 2-0.
As for Saudi-Ukraine, I'm going to guess Saudi 1 Ukraine 0. |

Just be glad you're not American. Yawn-inducing games are better than heart breaking massacres. |

Oh, definitely. I think Brazil are pretty overrated too, by people who just assume their brilliance without actually looking very closely at how they've been doing. Of course, you can hardly say they're rubbish and expect not to be laughed at but they've looked mightily unconvincing so far. I'm not even certain they'd beat England again!
Having said that, I can't see anyway of Japan beating them by the number of goals they need unless some serious money has changed hands.
Germany - Ecuador tonight? Not sure who to go for, but I noticed a British website which suggested it'd finish 17-16 as both teams tried desperately hard to lose so they could play England in the next round |

Wouldn't mind avoiding the Germans in Rnd 2 so anything but an England loss is a good result.
It looks like Rooney and Owen will start but I still fancy a 0-0.
Both teams are very defensive minded, particularly the Swedes. |

2-2 good game from both sides.
But England may be in trouble if they lose Owen. |

Ok, so I received a SPAM letter today (not from Nigera -- but from Cote d'Ivoire).
From : GUMSU ABACHA <[email protected]>
Sent : June 19, 2006 5:38:09 AM
To : [email protected]
Subject : Think about this.
From:Miss.Gumsu Abacha.
Lome Rep.Togo.
Good day and how are you today? I hope fine,Permit me to inform you of my desire of asking you to be a guardian or foster parent to me and then help me out in what I am about to tell you. I'm Miss.Gumsu Abacha (18 years old) from Cote d'Ivoire, and the only child of Late Mr. & Mrs. AHMED ABACHA. My father was a very wealthy cocoa merchant here in Cote d'Ivoire.
He was poisoned to death by his business associates on one of their outings on a business trip. My mother died when I was a baby. Before the death of my father on Sept. 2005 in a private hospital there in Cote d'Ivoire, he secretly called me by his bed side and told me that he has the sum of Eight million two hundred thousand United States Dollars USD
($8.200,000) deposited in a suspense account in one bank in Lome Rep.Togo. He told me that he used my name (Gumsu Abacha) as the next of Kin to deposit the money. He then strongly advised me NOT to seek for
assistance in the investment of the money from his lawyer nor any of his friend here but to seek for a foreign partner from any country of my choice (outside my country,Cote d'Ivoire ) that will assist me in the
wise investment of the money.I have since left the money in the bank with the view of making use of it for investment purposes after my educational carrier.
But as you may be already aware by now, my country Cote 'Ivoire )
is presently at war caused by political crises. Rebels have already taken over the whole Northern part of the country and making efforts towards the capture of the commercial center of the country( Cote d'Ivoire),I am presently in Lome Rep.Togo, where the money was deposited by my late
father and finally decided to take quick actions to contact you and have this money transferred out of the country Togo that is why I need your urgent assistance to transfer it out of the country and I will use it
for investment purpose like real estate management or hotel management Because of this I am honorably seeking your assistance in the following ways:
(1) To be my guardian and then assist me financialy to transfer the money into your bank account.
(2) To make arrangement for me to come over to your country to further my education and then settle there parmanently.
I am willing to offer you, 30% of the total money as compensation for your assistance. Please let me know if you feel the percentage I offered is not ok by you.As soon as I recieve your full assurance and corporation,I will then give you the bank contact information and then tell them to transfer the money into your account as I want to come over to stay with you parmanently. You shall then be giving me information on when the transfer will be over. I shall also send my picture to you and shall also need yours too. No matter what your decision may turn out to be,please I beg you to reply to my strictly on this my private email address
Thanks and God bless you.
Regards,
Miss.Gumsu Abacha.
I was thinking of replying to this....
Dear Ms. Abacha,
I would be more than happy to assist you in your time of difficulty. Unfortunately, I am a soccer fanatic... The only way I would consider helping you would be if your country's team won the World Cup soccer tournament currently in progress. Should Cote d'Ivoire emerge victorious, I would be more than happy to help you out. Otherwise, I apologize in advance that you won't be able to count on my assistance.
Please cheer for your country's team, and I hope, for your sake, they score many goals and win the World Cup.
Go Cote d'Ivoire!
Sincerely,
Jim Dunlop
What do you guys think? (I wonder if she's aware that both Argentina and the Netherlands have 6 points in that group)... |
