I got a job offer from ADU as an assistant professor. I was wondering about the unviersity and if it is promising. I was also wondering about the average for a decent 2-bedroom apt in Abu-Dhabi.
Thanks

Scroll through the previous threads. There's a lot of information out on ADU and most of it is not good.

I would say their problems are structural and unlikely to change any time soon.

Could you expand on that, Your Excellency?

... just a tongue-in-cheek remark regarding the language of the post ... no hot off the press news to fan the flames of gossip .... I'm afraid to say ...

I'd say that when there are this many bad postings on an employer... which have been consistent since it opened... and the latest posts are from this academic year... you can assume that things haven't changed all that much.

ADU has had HUGE problems in the EFL area - which is where most of our posters work - and any applicant should consider long and carefully before taking a position to teach English.

Since you are not in TEFL, things *may* be better within departments, but I would still want to correspond with current and ex-professors in the department that has offered you the job.

I just had to say something, ADU staff has just been informed that we will be having an ADU international school, for kids, and Im afraid to know whom they are hiring to run it. We are in the process of final exams, and teachers have been given bribes to pass students, not to mention, due to the bad publicity this term we are in the process of passing all students to keep them happy. If you are serious about moving to the UAE, find a good place to work, anything is better then here. You are given 55 K for housing, which is nothing and its lower if your single, not to mention we have the lowest vacation given to PhD holders, I dont even want to know what they give MA or BA holders, and they are so cheap, they find the lowest possible price on air-fare, so your flight has 2 plus connections and your connection flights are so long, and our health insurance is crap it covers almost nothing. So, if under all these conditions you still want to come and work here, then all I can say is I told you so. So, many of us were cheated and tricked when we were hire, we were promised roses and when we arrived we got cactuses. Take a pass when your turn is up.

I have heard of students paying their teacher anywhere from 3000 Dhs to 5000 Dhs. I heard a students dished out 10,000 one term to pass all his classes. And these are the ones I've heard about, which department do you ask, all of them, from English, Business, Accounting, IT the list goes on. Rolling Eyes Wink
Also, just so you know, ADU is trying to get it's students to do the I-BT Toefl, when it's own teachers can't even get 500 on it. Silly really. To expect so much from the students when they themselves can't even teach.. But some teachers are laughing their way to the bank! Morals, they have none. Again, keep away, if you values your sanity.

At last English teachers are getting some of the respect they deserve ... bribes of 3,000 upwards must be on a par with middle-ranking police and junior court officials ...

3000 - 5000 for one class ? More for a whole semester ??!! If there is a better recruitment incentive than that, I haven't heard of it - sign me up !
